How Do Consignment Sales Usually Work?

How do consignment sales typically work?
    • What's the average charge for it?
    • Is there a restricted legnth of time you can leave it there?
    • Are there pricing restrictions? - for instance I'm sure they wouldn't want me to tell them to try and sell my $100 gun for $500
    • Do shops usually take any and all guns or are they selective?
    • Would they still charge a PPT fee of $10?
    • What other rules are there?

Any other information around consignments would be much appreciated as well.

You might want to post this in the FFL forum.

I sold some guns by consignment at Turners over Christmas and here is what I remember:

1.) Turners charged 20% of the sale price
2.) They held the gun for 30 days before it could be sold. After it sold, they waited until after it was picked up before they paid me. For one of my guns, the guy drosed it but didn't pick up for 3 weeks after he paid for it.
3.) We negotiated a price to sell the gun at. I made a suggestion and they thought mine was too high.
4.) They did not charge a fee beyond the 20% of the sale price.
5.) Not aware of other rules.

I think it varies widely from dealer to dealer. One dealer around here basically puts a price on the gun no one in their right mind would ever pay in the hopes of getting a sucker to bite on it. After a month of two, the price starts to come down.

Dealer gets a fixed percentage of the final price - 20% seems pretty common, although I know of one dealer who charges less if you consign more guns with him.

Gun owner gets to set a minimum price. After the dealer gets tired of seeing the gun sit there long enough, he may ask you to lower the price or take the thing back.

I will say that I just sold a couple of rifles without going through consignment and it is actually a lot easier than when I sold through the consignment process. You get your money a lot quicker (no need to wait for the 30 pawn period) and it really doesn't take that long.

Oh.. that's good....I mean really good...

In Bakersfield the only store I know that does consignment does 20% and I think they require you leave the gun on the shelf for 90 days... they don't want you deciding they have taken too long... picking the gun up and then PPT the gun ... it's pretty simple.. .I sell all of my handguns that way (let me explain... no let me sum up - I only sell the occasional gun and only when SHE WHO MUST BE OBEYED wants a new one and I can't afford it and have to sell one of hers/mine to buy it - so with that caveat... ) although I am thinking of selling my Para Ord LDA through this site..

If you are to consign them try Contra Costa Collectible Firearms in Walnut Creek (925-937-3376)

They will work with you to come up with a "net price" you will get no matter what they sell it for. If you agree to this price (which is fair) Then who cares what they sell it for?

They get "free inventory" to fill the racks and you will get rid of a gun and have all of the transfer fees done for you.

If you have decent guns that are desirable to collectors (eg:1st. Gen. Colt SAA) or shooters then your net will always be higher. If you bring in a crusy Ted Williams 16ga. pump with a duct taped recoil pad and cut barrel, don't expect a miracle.

Point is, do your homework first! Check out what blue book values are and better yet what the gun is selling for (and I mean selling, not listed) on GB or GA,etc. That will help you determine a resonable net price that gives you the max payout and still allows the store to make a buck too.

You should try the FS forum here first, that is the best way to move a gun. If it does not get snapped up here you either have a non-desirable gun (Ted Williams 16 ga.) or you are priced too high (or both). No one will tell you that since that will be considered "crapping" on you. Just like anything else, quality items at fair prices will ALWAYS sell quickly so if they don't take a look in the mirror.

One rule that I heard is that if you put up a gun on consignment and for whatever reason, you need the gun back (doesn't sell, change your mind about selling, etc) you need to complete the DROS process. I don't know if it is true or not, but it sounds ludicrous to me !

I say sell it here first because if you can't sell it here... Something is wrong. Sometimes people will PM you to let you know that your price is too high. These are members who are trying to help not cap on your thread.
