    IIIA vs musket

anyone know of a resource that would have data regarding IIIA panels vs a musket/other early firearm. i searched didn't find anything.

if a musket for example can penetrate a IIIA panel then it would be a great counter argument to the infamous "cop killer" bullets.

Doesn't have to penetrate to defeat. Seems like blunt trauma would do a number.

Seems like a topic for range testing.

I'm sure the vest would stop it depending on range, powder charge, bullet type. However blunt trauma may be an issue.

Large diameter heavy projectile at low velocity isn't a very good combination for penetration.

i was thinking it was large enough and moving faster than a pistol round to overwhelm the pistol rated vest.

I doubt it's moving much faster than pistol rounds tho

a musket ball should weigh in somewhere around 500 grains with a muzzle velocity of 1200fps give or take?

Would it change any details of this experiment if a sabot with a jacketed projectile were used in place of lead ball or mini-ball rounds.

if you want 500 grains rolling at a vest i have some 600 grain soft lead point loaded beowulf ammo we can test their coming out around 1300fps

I've been told by a body armor sales guy that 50AE out of a Desert Eagle is unlikely to penetrate a level 3A vest, but it WOULD have lethal backface deformation. The Beowulf will either penetrate, or have even more backface deformation.

I'm not sure what the musket will do, but if the 50AE data is true, then there's no point in trying standard Beowulf ronds, as they're the same bullet with more velocity and mass. I can't imagine the 600's doing less damage than the 50AE either.

Also, in order to get accurate data, you ought to figure out some way to measure the backface deformation. I forget what the NIJ standard is for "threat stopped", but I think maximum allowable deformation is .5"?

                              Of tissue, sure.

Of armor, a bit less so.
