Post House Fire - Firearms Restoration/Inspection

So heres the story, details are vague as it just happened Sunday night. A friend of mine had a fire at her house, the neighbors house caught fire, and it spread to her house, and burned 3/4 of her house. She had a couple rifles and a handgun in the house, apparently not in a safe, and as I gather, they were not part of the items that directly burned. However, as I understand it, they were visibly affected by the fire, heat or smoke damage or whatever. Maybe even water, as the fire dept. did its thing. At any rate, I have not had a chance to look at the firearms, nor do I know the specifics on what they are. My question is, are there gunsmiths that specialize in post-fire inspection and cleaning? From what I got this morning on the phone, they may not need a full restoration, but depending on the heat level they were exposed to, from a safety standpoint, would'nt it make sense to have them inspected by someone qualified to do that? Any ideas?

water and smoke damage are a no biggie with firearms... heat damage can be iffy.. if they were fire damaged (exposed to the open flames) then they are wall hangers. But you should definately have them checked out. I dont know anyone persoanlly that does that type of inspection.

ALWAYS keep guns in a safe.

Take them to the smith and they'll take care of them.

Smoke and water no big deal. heat is another thing. Some of the gun parts may be heat treated the heat may of warped the barrel. Heat from a fired bullet is different than heat from a exterior source that burns hotter for a longer more consistent time.
a good gunsmith shoudl be able to tell her if the rifles were damaged or theire still ok.

I'd at least immediately disassemble and dry all internals if water was present to prevent rust.

I'd doubt they were damaged (just guessing), but if any plastic was disfigured that's a tale...

Are the firearms near to you? I know a smith outside Sutter Creek who does lots of work on older firearms. He has a great rep with people at the Sac Valley range.

PM me if that's conveniently close and I'll get you his number.

Right, that way when the punks break in and hold you at gunpoint, they can force you to open the safe and hand over your guns instead of USING them on the punks which is what you would have done had they NOT been in the safe....
