I was in this situation recently on business travel. I can't take my gun into the company facility so I had to leave it. I had called in advance to ask if the hotel had room safes and they didn't. They said "you can use the safe deposit boxes at the front desk to lock up your valuables." hmmm....
I just took my lockable case - it's a metal box similar to a center of mass safe but it has a combo lock rather than keys or biometric. I locked my EMP in that and either buries it in a drawer under my clothes or used the cable to clock it to the bed/undser the bed. I didn't like leaving it there but in reality I've never had anything stolen from a hotel by the staff and the staff are the only ones getting in. You would think they would get fired pretty fast if stuff started disappearing. But anyway I just put it on before I went out in the evenings or weekends. Worked out fine. I could have secured the box to the car trunk or under the seat as well but the parking lot seemed a little less safe and cars are easy to get into.

After some of those Marriott terror shenanigans back in '02 or so, I stayed at one in Florida... had my AK underfolder & loaded drum in my duffel bag.... my sister laughed at first (we were travelling together) but knows the score.... fast forward to what happened at Mumbai...... now it's just my HK USP.

Depending on circumstances I carry on my person or lock it in the hotel safe.

The wife and I were out of town for a fancy dinner once and there was no safe in the room. I called the front desk and made sure they had deposit boxes, they did. So I took my wife's full size 1911 out of her concealment purse and put it in the small of my back. I then stashed my double single stack mag pouch in under a pillow and Mexican carried my 1911 under my untucked shirt. We went downstairs to the lobby a few minutes early to secure the firearms in the hotel lock box. The staff was cool and got me some privacy and a box, the box was too small and was the largest box they had. By the time I walked back out the rest of the dinner party was waiting for me and we had to go. So I had to go around all night with two 1911's in my waistband all night. No dancing for me.

I've found articles online showing how to get in the in room safes in a hotel....very easy to do. Probably keep the maid or kids out...that's about it....assuming the maid is honest.

Any guns I bring with me on a trip always go with me. I prefer not to leave them in the hotel.

I agree with Turby! That is the purpose of bringing it with you, to protect your family & yourself in unfamiliar territory. I keep it with myself at all times if possible.

Likewise, we do the exact same thing.

I have a question for those of you that check it in at the desk for deposit in the safe. Do you simply hand them the firearm or do you have it in a bag. Hopefully it is the later. By the way I have never stayed in a hotel or motel that had a safe in the room

Here's my story (standing by for getting flamed): I carried years ago. I once left my 9mm in my hotel bedside stand on a weekend trip. To my horror, I realized, once I got home, that I'd left my trusty carry piece behind. A frantic call to the hotel and I learned that the staff had found my pistol and turned it in to the front office. Now think about this. They actually opened the nightstand and found my pistol, turned it in to the office, and the office later acknowledged to me that they had it (Texans can be honest like that). Today I'd be surprised if: 1) They were thorough enough to actually look in the nightstand when they cleaned the room, 2) The staff would turn it in to the office, 3) Someone in the office would be honest enough to admit they'd found it and hold it so one could retrieve it. Or am I just too cynical?
