I have an old Winchester Model 77 I picked up from a friends dad. It has some light to moderate rust on the outside of the barrel, and I was hoping someone could give me some pointers on how to remove/stop it from spreading. I've taken a wire brush to it but it didn't help much. Please keep in mind I can't afford a whole lot and I don't have a car, so hardware store type remedies would be most helpful.
On another note, I have a bit of a jamming/ejection/feeding problem with it. Not entirely sure which. It does a little of all of them, and sometimes it seems like one will be caused by another. I first fired unjacketed rounds through it, but was recommended jacketed by the rangemaster. That halved the jams, but didn't stop them. I also started loading the mags one light and that halved the jams again, but I still usually get one per magazine.
I just finished a major clean earlier, first I've had the time after I found how to take it apart, so hopefully that will help too. Unfortunately while cleaning it it seemed like my friend's dad had never cleaned it(god rest his recently departed soul).

) had a Sako from the 70's in his closet since well, the 70's. He showed it to me once and the grease/oil inside of it had hardened, and it wouldn't cock, fire, or anything. The safety was even stuck. I had to take it all apart, soak, scrub, and clean it to get it working again. I dunno WTF him or Sako put in there but it was crusty as all hell. If you cleaned it tonight, try it out and see if it's working properly.
