I've had no trouble at all buying/picking up a gun and its ammo on the same day.
I have had no trouble buying ammo while UOC'ing.
I suppose it would depend on the store."A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself...A murderer is less to fear. The traitor is the plague."......CiceroComment

The only places where having a gun, and ammo for that particular gun, is prohibited is at the State Capitol Grounds, Legislative Offices, Governor's Office etc. (if you don't have a CCW) or at a gun show.
See the following Penal Code sections.
