I am still having a hard time believing all the nice things being said about President Ford. I, at the time, thought he was setting a new standard for stupidity - what with his falling, "Poland is not under Soviet domination" and his, to me, bargained for pardon of Nixon.
I vote Republican so don't yell at me about being a liberal.

I was especially offended by the nonsense about sparing the nation and beginning the healing process. Should we not do the same for every murder suspect, rape suspect, burglary suspect? Should they not all receive pardons before even being charged, let alone having gone to trial and been convicted? That's what Ford did and I will never forgive him. Pardons are for convicted criminals who have some rare reason for being pardoned, not uncharged suspects.Originally posted by RogerbuttheadI am still having a hard time believing all the nice things being said about President Ford. Ford's pardon WAS the best thing for the nation. Nixon was out of office and you would have to be extremely naive if you don't think Nixon would have dragged every political skeletonhe had out of the closet .
It would have been long, ugly and ultimately crippling to the government of the US and we still had the very real threat of the Soviets looking for any opportunity.
The country was tired of Viet Nam and dirty politics. Ford's pardon of Nixon put a merciful end to it.

Well here it is 10:45 PM and despite the fact that your packages will sit in the Taft PO for the next two days, I am sticking them in the drop boxes tonight! Happy New Years Calgunners. Now I gotta get this done and get back to my wife before I get divorced.
Don't worry, at the ripe age of 29, I officially feel old. Why you ask? I told that to my mother in law earlier tonight at dinner. She said, "Why, because you are spending New Years at home."
I said, "No worse, I am spending it with you."

We are a nation of LAWS not KINGS
Sure, let's pardon every suspect in every criminal case to avoid having any possible skeletons being dragged out.Originally posted by GWFord's pardon WAS the best thing for the nation. Let's issue pardons based on friendship before charges are even brought rather than wrongful conviction after a trial and appeals.
Let's pardon Lee Harvey Oswald, he never had a trial. Was he even charged with anything? Start the healing! Don't drag out those skeletons about Cuba and the Soviet embassy in Mexico City and Mafia connections and who knows what else! For that matter, don't give us the chance to find out those skeletons didn't exist.
Heck, pardon Timothy McVeigh, let's stop comemorating that OK City anniversary, let the healing begin!
Maybe the Germans should pardon Hitler and all the other dead Nazis who were never even charged with crimes. Heavens! Think of all the skeletons they could have dragged out. Oh wait, I forgot, we hired some of them to get to the moon.
Maybe we should pardon Osama bin Laden! Has he been charged with any crimes? Think of all the healing we have already missed out on from not pardoning him on 9-12. We could have avoided this whole Iraq fiasco. The Iraqis wouldn't have had to wonder whether they should have pardoned Saddam.
We are supposed to be a nation of laws, not men. Rules, not rulers. We don't have kings, be they named Richard or George.
Ford should have been impeached for that pardon.Mention the Deacons for Defense and Justice and make both left and right wingnuts squirmComment

Hm, my mom works at a bank, they have pretty strict requirements about having to be open certain days. Can't take a 3 day weekend at all, if a holiday falls on a friday, they have to be open the saturday. Closed by default on Sunday, then have to be open on Monday. If the holiday is on saturday or monday, they can take saturday and sunday off, or sunday and monday off. I don't think our calendar ever ends up with two holidays scheduled simultaneously, right after a weekend. I wonder if she'll have to work, I bet probably. But the stock market being closed if banks have to be open? I donno...Originally posted by Rob454I would bang her till her insurance kicked in. Gerald ford was the only president to never have been elected by the people. I guess the same people that put him in power need a day off.

Dying doesn't absolve someone from the bad things they have done. Or do you praise Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, Mao, and Saddam?Originally posted by dhlPeople, can we have a little respect for the dead, please.
As for Ford, I imagine the couple hundred-thousand East Timor deaths weighs his soul down more right now than his pardoning Tricky Dick.* Freedom is the human right to live your life however you damn well please, so long as you don't interfere with another's right to do the same.

This might start a firestorm, but he is dead. How is a dead president any different than you or I? Aren't we all created equal? Why should legitimate commerce be screwed up over someone who hasn't been important since 1976 (before I was even born!) and when he is already dead so there is no going back? Having this day of rememberence won't change a damn thing especially to so many American's who weren't alive or had coherent rational thought when he was President. Not to mention he lost to Jimmy Carter!Originally posted by dhlPeople, can we have a little respect for the dead, please.
Again, I think they should have had a "The post office will be open and postal employees will make a commitment to offer above average service in honor of President Ford" day. That would have been more honorable than taking a day off. Who in the hell is going to sit around and ponder President Ford's contributions tomorrow? The only thing that is going to happen is postal employees will get more screwed up tonight because they don't have to wake up early tomorrow. In fact, any postal employees that DUI and injure someone tonight will have the opposite effect. The victim's blood will be on President Ford's hands! Well, actually, on whoever made tomorrow a holiday. Would that be Bush? First Iraq, now this. When will it ever end?www.tenpercentfirearms.com was open from 2005 until 2018.
