Is this AK rivet too long?

It sticks out about 6mm. I know it it expands inside the hole, and the head will mushroom, but it just seems like there's too much material here.

If that's a rear trunion (either pistol or underfolder, it's certainly not a rear stock tang) it looks about right actually.

Where'd you get your rivets from?

If it's an ak-builder.com rivet, it's definitely good. If it's from somewhere else, I'd wonder.

I'm actually at the point where anyone showing up to one of my build parties with something OTHER than rivets from ak-builder.com, is going to have to buy ak-builder rivets from me if he wants his gun built. It's just not worth my time to have to drill out rivets that got mis-crushed (and chip in a FREE rivet from one of my own bags, which costs ME money to help the other guy!) all because the guy wanted to save $2 by buying a greasy gun show bag instead of buying rivets that work reliably.

I have no idea where rssslvr gets his rivets, but he has another brand he buys that don't suck. Guys showing up with the same rivets from there are ok too.

The rivit should stick out 1-1/2 times the diameter of the shank, your pic looks like that rivit is right on. As for AK builder rivits, they squish really nice up front but for some reason I tend to get better looking results on the rear trunion using Tapco rivits.

Its a Yugo fixed stock trunion. And the ammount of rivet sticking out is just right. They compress a lot when forming the rivet head. The rivet will turn out the best if you have a riveting set up from AK builder or plinkers.

Hmmm, I've got akparts.com rivets for my current build because I was buying a bunch of other parts from them. I haven't used any yet. Do you think it would be worth it to order ak-builder rivets instead?

If it's a Tapco rear rivet, leave it and don't grind it down (experience ).

I don't know for sure that akparts.com rivets are bad, but I do know that I've spent a lot of time having to drill bad/cheap rivets back out, and I'm not sure where the crappy rivets I've dealt with have come from. I only know that I have yet to see a bad rivet from ak-builder.

Haven't had a lot of major issues with ak-builder rear rivets, but in my experience so far the rear trunion rivets do seem to be tougher to get right with all the rivets I've seen... that's why I've got the new ak-builder jig on order (which includes a fancy setup just for doing the rear rivets!)

Yes, it is a AKbuilders rivet set. So good to know it's right. Also, I'm using the rivet jig setup from Gunthings.com for the long rivets. Hopefully I'll have it done this weekend. Pictures to follow. Thanks fellas.

My first impression of it is, it's very nicely built. Finish and fit is very nice. However, I already have a problem with it. I'm sure it would work fine on the AKM long rivets with the barrel still in the trunion, but it doesn't work with a Yugo with the barrel fitted. The sight block gets in the way of lining up the rivet in the jig. It would fit if the nut were offset about an inch.

I'll do a post when I work on it this weekend.
