My dads brother Mark died in 1969 while he was just starting to convert a model 1917 Eddystone into a hunting rifle. The rifle went to my Grandfather in pieces. It sat in a box until it was given to my dad in the late 80s.

About a year ago my Dad and I were cleaning out a storage unit and I came across the barreled receiver, stock, and a box of parts. He told me the story and said I could have it.

It had most of the original parts. It needed a trigger guard, upper handguards, front sight, and some bolts. I ordered it all from Numerich and had it within a week. The stock was beat and didn't have any cartouches so I sanded and steamed it. Bluing was ok and none too rusty. The bore (once cleaned) is actually in very good condition. I refinished a few metal parts along with the stock. I then found an original GI leather sling. By the time I was done it was very original looking, nice condition but not pretty. I had the rifle completed by November.

The whole family was together for Christmas dinner. After we had all exchanged gifts and were getting ready to say our good byes for the evening. I told my Dad I had one more gift for him. I brought out the completed rifle and told him what it was. He was overcome to the point he really couldn't speak other than to say thank you. My Dad is not the emotional type at all and he was definitely moved on a deep level.

Funny how an inanimate object first made to make war can bring people closer together. I know all of you here understand but most others won't ever understand.
