Hearing Loss?

Heres the deal: I have a pair of ear plugs that work ok. I wore them at the outdoor range several times and enjoy them because I still get a decent dose of volume through them which helps me get used to the noise of the gun.

Today however, I went to an indoor range to shoot my handgun. I was a little freaked out when I removed my earplugs and could barely hear a thing. It has been 6 hours now and my left ear is not hearing very well. Everything is muffled.
My question is, wont this go away? I mean, people in war dont all go deaf and they fire weaponry all the time. Will I permanantly lose my hearing in my left ear? help please.

You're going to be deaf for life. Get a TV that does captions



It'll probably come back, but if you're super freaked go to the doctor and have them check it out. I've blown out my hearing a couple of times and it's always come back.

Same here. I blew my eardrum out once and they did have to put it back together, but I dunno man unless you were shooting 50bmg indoors I think you'll be fine.

I would think that your hearing would return within a short amount of time 1-2 days. I have the same experience myself with Mosin Nagant rounds.

After that I invested in a pair of Howard Leight earmuffs.

Not to be smart, but have you cleaned the wax build up out of your ear?

I always wear plugs and muffs when I shoot indoors. But I never shoot indoors if I can avoid it, I haven't had to do it in over 10 years.

It will come back. Its like going to a concert and sitting by the speakers. Your hearing will come back but there is a certain amount of permanent damage although it may be so small it can't be measured. The small amounts of continual damage leads to early hearing loss over the years. Always use high NRR rated plugs.

For starters, use the best ear protection you can afford. I don't mean to freak you out, but hearing loss can be permanent. It can also be time sensitive, so if by tomorrow it's not better get to a doctor. Again, don't want to scare you but it's wise to get it checked out.

This. Double up when indoors. I even double up when shooting the big stuff outdoors. Granted, I'm extra cautious with my hearing since I had ear surgery and had some titanium replacement parts installed.

You did damage, the extent to which you probably will never know or even notice - your ears/brain compensate.

Eventually, if you continue to do this, you will go deaf.

It's all about reducing your damage - everyone gets some - to prevent premature hearing loss. That's the key.
