Strange Reaction

I went into a UPS store today to ship a firearm back to the manufacturer it was packed inside it's original box unloaded and and sealed inside another outer box. I gave the clerk at the counter the form they ask you to fill out
listing the Addressee, sender and contents and asked for next day air service.

She looked at me and literally ran out of the room screaming for her boss. After calling her boss she returned somewhat agitated and said I would need to take it to the main UPS hub 10 miles away.

What is up with people today? when I was 12 (I'm 61, and a native Californian), I used jump on my bike with my 22 rifle on my back, ride to the hardware store and by a box of 22 ammo and go shooting in the hills. No one ever said a word to me.

PS I bought my first handgun in a hardware store.

Really I mostly blame the hippys for destroying california, But they can't be blamed to much, mass distribution of birth control pills and LSD are really to blame for creating the hippies. You must be pretty young. The 1970s weren't that long ago. Me and my middle-school buddies would walk along the country roads of Virginia, in order to get to the next patch of forest, with .22s and shotguns on our shoulders. People would pass by, either walking or driving, and nobody ever looked twice.

California probably wasn't much different.

You need to give the firearm to a common or contract carrier like UPS or FedEx if you want to ship it, or even to the USPS or FedEX Ground if it is a long gun. You can't just hand guns over to unlicensed strangers at some retail business like The UPS Store. In California, you'd need to have the employee of The UPS Store DROS the firearm from you at your local FFL, wait ten days to pick it up, and then they could hand it over to the common/contract carrier for shipment. So the clerk might not have been afraid of guns. She might have just been afraid of the illegal firearms transfer you were suggesting.

I had time for that "mass distribution of birth control pills and LSD....Free love, make love(orgies)" I lived through the 60's, can't really remember them though But I never saw anything wrong with a few guns.

Oh well, now I'm one of those old farts I used to complain about. I guess it's the old folks home for me next. (but I'm not given up my !@#$% guns!).

I took it to an FFL and had them ship it off for me! Now it will come back to the FFL when it's fixed.

As already mentioned, the "UPS Store" is an independent retailer/middleman; they used to be known as "Mailboxes Etc." The only thing they offer you is conv enience but at a steep price; typically double the price of the already steep UPS rates. You need to go directly to a UPS customer counter facility.

It's just california. I orderd a gun from J&G sales the other day and was waiting outside for the UPS truck. A cute little blondie showed up asked for my signature, asked if it was a gun and then smiled when I said yes.

Not quite sure how she knew it was a gun.

Because of the gun-shaped box or the fact it's from J&G Sales, likely. Heck, I got in a reloading conversation with the guy behind the UPS counter the other day.

oh..and it's only *some* parts of California. I get the same reaction when the BBT shows up with a C&R at my house. Except my UPS driver isn't a cute little blondie

Fed Ex will only take a handgun at their hub store, ship overnite express only, & fill out the paperwork. Cost me $81 last month.

I believe it is illegal to ship fireworks, through the USPS. It is a prohibited item. My Bad!

I could have listed it as machine parts which would have been true. But what the heck its on it's way now and out of my hands.

And by the way young fellers there were no UPS in my days. It was just the Pony Express, and the women riders could fight, and swear, and spit as well as the men. There was no global warming and a hybrid were a mule.

FFL charged actual shipping charges + 25.00 for paperwork.
