Hey guys, I'm new to the forum and have just decided to buy a gun and practice shooting. I live in south Orange County (San Clemente area). Does anyone know of a good FFL and range? I see a few online - most seem small and therefore hard to find reviews. Would love to hear your recommendations. I don't mind driving longer for a better place.

Welcome from another San Clemente local. I've been a member at On Target for close to 10 years now. Yeah, some of the range staff can be a little over the top in attitude. No worse than other indoor ranges though. Then again I occasionally have had attitude at other shops too. I will admit I don't shop there since it was less than stellar customer service the few times that I did.Last edited by smoothy8500; 12-11-2023, 9:33 AM.Comment

On Target is fine and probably the closest range to you. The only attitudes I have ever seen in there from staff is when dumb people do dumb things. It's an indoor 25 yard range and rules at such places are always stricter than the great outdoors so follow the rules which aren't outrageous and there aren't any problems. I have a membership and have been going there since the 90's. They have expanded a lot in the last few years. More staff, more classes, more guns.
If you a buy a gun from them, you can check it out of "jail" and use it on the range within your 10 day waiting period. Did that once and it was fun.
Lots of great FFLs in Orange County. My favorites are Riflegear and OC Firearms.Comment

I second Riflegear and OC Firearms, nice places with average fees. OC Firearms usually has consignment pieces, off roster stuff. OC Guns in Lake Forest also has nice consignment, off roster stuff every now and then also.
Iron Sights is a great place down in Oceanside if you?re ever in the area, cool spot for sure.I see your swartz is as big as mine, now let's see how well you handle itComment

Range:
On Target for the range. Allows you to use steel case ammo, (the only one in OC) and your own slugs for shotguns. Some days, allows you to draw from holster.
To shoot long guns, you have to take a 30min class that starts on either Sat or Sun, 9am for $20. But it includes range time for that $20, and allows you to use the range before it opens to public. They also help you zero your optics or sights. There is no time limit at the range.
They have never given me any issues.
FT3, otherwise known as Fudd Time, Target, & Training, does not allow steel case. Allows you to shoot shotguns, but need to buy their overpriced shotgun ammo which are slugs. No drawing from holster unless you are LE, and does not allow AR pistols because it scares them.
They love to finger your firearms at check-in, and I've been harassed by their older (I will say it, as it may be relevant) White RSOs for removing my rifle from case on the back counter, but seen that same RSO allow another White shooter to clean, disassemble, and reassemble a rifle at the back counter when their rules clearly state you are not allowed to clean your gun after check-in. I've had their RSOs constantly check my ammo in the lane for steel case, despite them already checking during check-in.
I've even had my guns checked at the firing line during a "Calguns Meet and Shoot" I attended before Covid at Fudd Time.
FFL:
On Target is also a FFL unlike FT3.
OC Guns (Lake Forest) is another great FFL.
Riflegear is also another good FFL.
Rifle Supply used to be good, but now charges $47.19 for dros whether it be PPT or bought new from store.
Saddleback Valley Gun Center is another good FFL, but you need thick skin.
Firearms Unknown (Lake Forest) known for their children's books became Fudds. As they will not sell you Pistol Braces saying it is illegal despite their online store selling it. They can't tell the difference between a stock and a brace either. They also consider Calguns.net a "blog."

I live in az but come to ca twice a month for work and stay at my moms down street from on target I don?t care for that place now. Use to shoot there when first opened and was great.
But if I need a part I can?t find locally at home I stop into firearms unknown and they seem to be pretty good place and friendly staff and well stocked for parts too. I pretty much pass right by there daily when I work in ca too. And shop I have to go too for work is 1/4 mile south of on target.Comment

Not trying to defend Ahole range staff but remember they have to deal with a LOT of ignorant, unsafe, entitled and just plain STUPID people with guns/new gun owners every day. I doubt I would have the patience to be nice all the time."Extremism in defense of liberty is no vice. Moderation in pursuit of justice is no virtue." ----Sen. Barry Goldwater

I've posted about On Target before.
All things considered okay by me.Comment

Yeah, went to On Target today and the staff was totally cool. Had to renew my membership and the lady at the desk was really friendly. The two guys at the range desk were professional about repeating the safety rules. The one “weird guy “ that was annoying hasn’t been there the last three trips so maybe he left.Comment
