before i spend money in changing my home/self defense handguns' front sight, i'm curious which one is more easily recognize/pick up by the eyes?

Front sight with Green ring, Yellow, or Orange ring?

I'm partial to green or orange. Def not yellow. And if you're colorblind at all, that can affect things. If one of the colors doesn't obviously "pop" more for you, then it probably isn't worth worrying about. Just pick your fav and go with that.
Note too that if you are ever thinking about mounting a red dot on the pistol, you might want to go with a more low key front sight. YMMV."Kestryll I wanna lick your doughnut."

it was cloudy today and looking out the kitchen window i was imagining the different color of leaves (green, yellow, red, orange, etc.) as my front sight. i noticed the yellow caught my eyes.
i'll compare it come monday when it's sunny and see what color pops more.Comment

well, didn't expect it to be sunny this morning but it is so i look out from the kitchen window again and my eyes are drawn to bright colors like yellow/lime the same as yesterday when it was cloudy.
very interesting observation because i never thought of yellow/lime front sight , i'm always partial towards green or orange. need to do some more experiment against different background and lighting.Comment

It's mostly personal preference. However, the dot color is not related to the color of the target, but to your peripheral vision and how much it provides a subconscious visual cue as the sights enter your field of vision.
The reason for the competition-style "flat back and fiberoptic dot on the front" sights is to have a *single* visual cue of where the front sight is *before* it's lined up and *as* it is being brought to the index position. Even with one dot, you'll see two of them initially since your eyes are not focused on the dot until much later. If you had (all) three dots on the sights, you'd see six of them in your peripheral vision and it would defeat the purpose of the fast sight acquisition since you would have to use conscious processing to sort out all the dots.
Again, the dot is not really for aiming (although you could do it, technically), it's for faster target acquisition through visual reference of where the "aiming thingy" is. You still use your front and rear sights the way you'd use them without a dot. Even if you use the dot in a variant of "combat sight picture," it's still the front sight that defines POA/POI, not the dot itself. You are just using it to "cover the target" with the front sight.
At night, one can argue that three *tritium* dots are required and that's probably true, but that is a very special home defense case. When you cannot see your sights, you need something else to line them up. That's where *three* dots come into play, when it's not about the speed, but about the alignment. This would be true for any low contrast situation where the sights are not distinguishable from the background (e.g., hunting), but it is much more limited with self-defense handguns because you have to identify a very close target.
Just remember, outside of the low visibility situations (and you need enough ambient light to identify the target), the front sight dot is for speed, not aiming.sigpicNRA Benefactor MemberComment

Personal preference, blended or balanced by environment.
If you're predominantly in an area with trees, grasses and shrubs, green probably isn't a first choice. Likely orange is your best bet.
In an urban setting, orange is very good.
My eyes like neon green and neon yellow from Ameriglo and Trij. Those really pop for me. Others prefer orange. While I am a current and practicing attorney, I'm not your attorney or the attorney for anyone on the forum. For anything other than really close range/hd, I black my sights out so I get proper alighnment. Colored sights and night sights throw me off. I do like Taran fibers though, they are at the top of the front post.
For hd simple tritium front for night.Last edited by Mezcalfud; 12-03-2023, 7:53 PM.Comment

In the olden days before the Hi-Speed-Low-Drag-Operators roamed the earth, someone realized that night sights of
any color were, (not meant for), inadequate for providing enough light to positively identify the target.
That realization forced the disappointed into learning how to shoot and reload a semiauto pistol while keeping the
flashlight in the dominate hand.
For revolver shooters and for clearing a malfunction we are still SOL unless or until we start agreeing with those other dudes.Comment

1) how do you shoot with the flash light in your dominant hand? (And why not use your support hand)In the olden days before the Hi-Speed-Low-Drag-Operators roamed the earth, someone realized that night sights of

2) it is "dominant" (adjective or noun). "Dominate" (verb) is a different word. Back in the old days before high speed, low drag operators with bad grammar roamed the Earth, people knew this.Expert firearms attorney: https://www.rwslaw.com/team/adam-j-richards/
