    Ammo purchase question

Step father has an old winchester lever gun in .25/20, I think 1920's production. It was his fathers gun, he has it in the safe for years and never shot it. Now he (and me) want to shoot it so we have to round up some ammo.

So for this CA BS, you can only buy ammo in a caliber of a firearm you purchased within X years. Is c+r exempt? Or for this scenario, can he sell me the gun and then I can buy ammo? Can he 'sell himself' the gun so he can buy ammo? We probably wont shoot it enough to justify buying dies, brass, etc.

Either one of you can buy the ammunition. There's no requirement to have a gun in a specific caliber before buying ammo for it.

If a buyer isn't in the state database i.e. hasn't bought a gun in decades, that person will have to do the full up $20 background check. A buyer who's bought a gun recently can get away with the $1 background check.

Who told you that? Did you do any research or due diligence to verify that information before you explored the possibility of buying dies, etc.?

      Your information is bad.

Hey brother, I've read that here more than once. It's not true but it's keeps getting spread.

If you or your step father have dros-ed a gun you "should" be fine..

You might want to take a good look at the gun and make sure it's gtg with today's loads. Maybe look for some cowboy loads. Hec! That might be all you can find in that caliber.

Do you think you can show us a few pictures when you take it out. Maybe post them up at the thread below. I know the guys there would love to see it.

As far as finding ammo in 25/20 it’s pretty tough to run across on a local gun shop shelf. 32/20 is much more popular and that’s a hard find lately . If you cant find the odd box in the ammo section here look up Old Western Scrounger ,they were my best bet for obsolete rounds .Probably looking between 70-100 bucks for a 50 round box would be my guess in 2023.

Alternatively, you can create a CFARS account and update your information; DROSing a gun is not necessary.
