Can anyone recommend a reliable and easy to use dehumidifier for my "14 Gun Safe". It's filled with rifles, misc. bayonets, pistols and some ammo, and I'm concerned about developing rust. There's no thru-wall electrical connection so it has to be something portable and rechargeable. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Thanks. I found this on Amazon and have it sitting in my cart. But still deciding if it's the best option based on a negative review that said they stopped working after 4th recharge."How long would the Nazis have kept it up, General, if every Jew they came after had met them with a gun in his hand?"

What are the humidity percentages you are experiencing now? Several folks go straight to heating rods and dehumidifiers when they are not needed. Ideally, you would like to have a temp around 70 degrees and a humidity around 50% but a 20% swing either way should not be a major issue. Over 70% and you can have issues and under 20% or so is not good if you have any wood as it can dry out to the point of cracking. I just looked in one of mine. 70 degrees and 37% humidity. The only thing I have in my safes are some bullfrog rust blocker shields. Put fresh ones in the safe once a year, never had an issue.Last edited by Hairball; 11-19-2023, 9:12 AM.Comment

I have relatively low humidity where I?m at at but I?ve run power to my safes and have Golden Rods installed. No issues at all but whatever you choose, be sure to monitor it. Something below 50% is ideal.NRA Life MemberComment

I have 2 eva-dry in my safe, maybe 4 - 5 years, along with a goldenrod.
Do not leave them plugged in for too long.
That might be what is causing the beads to turn black (from the 1 star reviews) by overheating once they are sufficiently dried out.Originally posted by Kestryll:

I use Lockdown dehumidifiers. They keep my safes nice and dry.

Looks good, but this operates on AC power. Does your gun safe have a power hook-up? Otherwise, how do you get an electrical cord into your safe?I use Lockdown dehumidifiers. They keep my safes nice and dry.

How do you run power to your safe - - was it wired for power when you bought it?"How long would the Nazis have kept it up, General, if every Jew they came after had met them with a gun in his hand?"

Get a hygrometer (humidity meter) so you can truly monitor what is going on inside your safe.
Without power, a big can of desiccant is a must. Get the kind that changes color when it becomes saturated so you know when to pop it in the oven to refresh it.
Beyond that, giving your items a good coat of Renaissance Wax periodically will help. It's great stuff and don't let the price of the can scare. One can will last forever and you'll find a ton of uses for it.
And if you have the space, something along the lines of silicone impregnated Bore Stores are excellent."Kestryll I wanna lick your doughnut."
