    AR15 PISTOL PPT DROS

Hi every one, I have question about AR 15 Pistol PPT transfer. What is the difference between, Dros as Pistol Receiver only as Semi Auto Pistol, Versus putting an mag lock on the Pistol and Dros as an complete pistol. What are the advantage and disadvantage. Thank you so much for all the help in advanced.

Any shop can DROS a stripped receiver as a semi-auto, receiver-only.
It's only a matter of if they choose to or not.

Some shops will not even DROS a stripped receiver and will require it to be assembled into a complete semi-auto handgun before they will do the DROS.
That will mean it needs to be fixed magazine as well since that's the only way to make an AR pistol legal today.

Barrel, sight and trigger work on most pistols and shotguns.
    Most work performed while-you-wait.

Thank you so much for your reply. One question. If I choose to Dros a stripped receiver. Will I have issue when I put the upper receiver together. To be an AR Pistol with out an mag lock? Thank you

You can't have "featureless" AR pistol because it accepts magazine outside the pistol grip and because barrel shroud is a feature for pistols (don't quote me on it, it might have changed, but either way AR pistol cannot be featureless).

So, it's either you had registered it the last time around, or you must have a fixed magazine up to 10 rounds. The lawsuits challenging CA AWB are reaching their final stages, so in a year or two it might all be moot.

Thanks for your input. So if I registered the complete AR Pistol with mag / Fixed 10 Rd Mag. I can not remove the Mag lock once I take home from the FFL, is that correct? Thank you.

The issue has to do with compliance with assault weapons laws. Follow the flow chart here:

Note that rifles have a different flow chart from pistols.

Short answer: you're correct. Don't conflate the DROS paperwork and state database with the "assault weapon registration." Those are completely unrelated processes and the AW registration window has been closed for a few years now.

You're late to the party, so the only option for an AR pistol is to have a maglock that requires action to be opened in order to replace magazine AND you can only use up to 10 round magazines.

With rifles, it makes infinitely more sense to go featureless and have both normal magazine release and (legally acquired) standard magazines (CA calls them "high capacity ammunition feeding devices" or some such euphemism). But since you can't go featureless with AR pistols, they are very limited in functionality at the moment and few will consider buying them.

Must be fixed mag before you dros.

                          Not true under the law.

That's the policy in many shops though.
There are shops that will PPT a stripped semi-automatic lower.
Since the stripped pistol lower is exempt of the roster when transferred by PPT, it's not legally necessary for the receiver to be fully assembled.
