    Took the boy shooting today

Took the boy shooting for the first time in 3+ years today. Damn what a difference a couple of years makes. The last time I took him out was at a quarry shoot, and he totally blew it so I haven't taken him since. Today, he did damn near perfect listening, and didn't lose his cool when I was giving him pointers. Next time I've got to bring some tools to adjust his sights, they're WAYYY off so he ended up using my 22 most of the time. He killed off an entire brick of 22. I can tell next time we're out if I want to shoot my 22 I'm going to have to fight him for it.
Lord, make my hand fast and accurate.
Let my aim be true and my hand faster
than those who would seek to destroy me.
Grant me victory over my foes and those who wish to do harm to me and mine.
Let not my last thought be 'If I only had my gun."
And Lord, if today is truly the day you call me home, let me die in an empty pile of brass.

Ha ha serves you right, and I hope he is a better shot then you too!

Glad you were able to go, it's called bonding and just so you know my daughter did not listen the first time either, but asked when we would do it again and I told her when she learns to listen, she was 14 at the time and is now 21 and almost as good a shot. ( I go more then her or it would be different)

I have 2 sons (3 and 5) and when I take them to shoot (I have already "helped" them shoot pellet guns) the first thing I am going to do is put them through the "marine shooting" regimen.

Glad this trip went better than the last. How old is your son?
My daughter is 8 now and has been shooting her little .22 for just over a year. At first we had to remind her about everything constantly, but now it's just a quick refesher each time we go out. She probably doesn't need the refresher, but we do it anyhow.

He's 8, almost 9. I think he was 3-4 the first time he went out. He did good for alittle while, but blew it when he got pissed at me once and threw his rifle. So, 3 years after the fact I finally took him out again and it went well.

My daughter was about the same age when we took her out the first time. She just seemed too timid, and wasn't really paying attention well enough in spite of saying she wanted to do it. I guess the just have to be ready for it.

Most of the time when he was younger, I'd let him use one of my 22 pistols and spray the hill side with it up at the families property, then he started coming to quarry shoots and he'd lay low and be good, but when he turned 5 I got him his own 22 as a gift for becoming a big brother, and that was when his attitude really changed. I'm really glad this trip went as well as it did. He was even in the mix with the "old timers" chattin it up.

I call my dad's Beretta 92 "mine" . Coincidentally, we went to the range together today and shot my newly sprung from 10 day jail 10/22.

Second time in 15+ years since he either lost interest in shooting or, more likely, was never really interested in it in the first place. When I ask him why he bought 2 guns when he's not that into it, he said "because we weren't allowed to have guns in Taiwan."

Good for you, Blue! Now he has something to brag about in school..."How I spent my Summer Vacation"..
Actually I only started collecting Milsurps 3 years ago. I think I might own about 24...They're cheaper than guns that will most likely never get the opportunity to kill somebody...

Congrats on the good experience. My 11-year-old has been shooting with me for a while, but decided he wanted to compete with me. Because the full-size guns are still a little much for him (not to mention 9mm ammo isn't readily available), he shot his .22 at last weekend's IDPA match. He made me proud.

Nice, I hope one day I can share that experience. No kids.

Did you go to TargetMasters? I was over at Reed's today, letting a buddy shoot for the first time.

Are you implying that .22 is readily available?

Kids are great, I still remember the first time my youngest one managed to pull all of the prerequisite skills and coordination together to hit clay pigeons. OMG, you would've thought he was 10 feet tall that day. He has never looked back, been a clay pigeon killing machine ever since and in the morning he is going in to finalize some paper work and enlist in the Army. Kids are great.

I started teaching my sons how to shoot 22's at the ages 4 and 6. When they were 6 and 8 I gave each of them for Christmas a Marlin semi-auto and a Ruger bearcat. They've had many guns since and now are both grown men. A family who shoots together, stays together. Another fact the anti's don't want to admit is kids who shoot and hunt are far less likely to get in any kind of trouble.
