    Buying guns in military

    I have a quick question for you guys. Can military personelle buy firearms in the state in which they are stationed? Do they somehow become residents of the state in which they are stationed, or is there a different way? It would suck to join up and not be able to continue collecting. Thanks.

      Your PCS orders are good enough for the state you PCS to.

        Yes we can, We become residents of California after being here for 6 months I think, also Military can buy a weapon in just about any state. Sometimes it does have its perks.

          If you live on base (as most new enlistees do), owning a gun is more problem than it's worth. You'll have to store the weapon and ammo in the unit armory, or possibly another unit armory (like a base command). Trying to sync up a shoot and retreive/store the weapon on your liberty hours is insane.

          Your other option is to store the weapon at someone's off base location (or possibly base housing, depedning on the installation). But then has it's drawbacks, too.

            What about a person from California that gets stationed in another state. Could they buy things that are normally illegal here as long as they don't bring it back into Ca? Or make it legal before they came back?

                You are only subject to CA gun laws while in the state of CA.

                        No six month waiting period. MIlitary members are exempt from the residency requirements as they are considered residents the day they report for duty in California. A copy of your PCS Orders showing that you are stationed in California and your Military I.D. are all you need to prove residency as a member of the armed forces.

                          A California resident in the military, if stationed in let's say Nevada, can buy whatever any other Nevada resident can legally buy in Nevada. If he/she wants to buy Colt AR-15, they can. If it is illegal to bring into CA, then it must be left outside of the state. If they buy a semiauto handgun with a threaded barrel (Assault Weapon in CA), they could either change out the barrel, or high temp silver solder a thread cap on it to make it CA legal. They could then bring it into CA. If they bought an Assault Weapon that was an Assault Weapon because of features, then they could disassemble it, or change out the features that make it an Assault Weapon, and bring it into CA.

                            I had thought that service members could fill out a form that allowed them to bring in their "AWs" while stationed in California.

                              Yep. Called a military assault weapon permit.

                              The courage to change the things I can;
