    CA DOJ COE Question

You don't need it with LiveScan to buy a gun, but to buy ammo?

Can someone clarify or point to some reading material that won't take a law degree to read?

    Thanks in advance

Please advise what you mean by "it".
To buy ammo (now) in CA you need to have a 'real ID" drivers license or a valid passport (a color photocopy will do) and (here it gets confusing) "Certificate of Eligibility Verification Check: This eligibility check may be used by individuals who have a current Certificate of Eligibility to acquire or possess firearms. A determination may be completed in approximately 2 minutes. The fee for a Certificate of Eligibility Verification Check is $1.00.
Basic Ammunition Eligibility Check: This eligibility check can be used by individuals who do not possess a current Certificate of Eligibility to acquire or possess firearms, or do not already have information entered in the Automated Firearm System. A determination may take several days to complete. The fee for the Basic Ammunition Eligibility Check is $19.00."
These rules apply if you are buying a box of 50 22LR or a pallet of 223.
One exception is if you are at a gun range you can buy ammunition without the hassle (above) provided you shoot it at the range.
    God help us all.

or to say it another way:

The "it" refers to the DOJ COE.
The text on ca.gov website makes it sound like you need a live scan to get the COE, but they don't require a live scan for buying a gun ???!!?

I am happy to jump through the hoops, if the rules were a bit easier to follow, now I am just confused.

      Thanks again.

No live scan (as I understand your question)

When buying ammo, the FFL dealer will process the necessary paper work for you. You have to sign several places.

If you are already on record for buying a gun in California, the paperwork is a two sided form that the dealer and you sign and is instantly processed (but cost a $1)

No live scan to buy a firearm but a background check is required. A live scan is required for a Calif. CCW however.

You only need to have a firearm registered to you at your current address to buy ammo. They will do the $1 background check instantly and you are on your way.

Thank you for the clarification. Saved me some money and a lot of time.

Blatant plug: If you are in Ventura County, look up ammunition1 or Copper Jacket. I just found them and they have one of the largest selection and good prices in the county. Unforutnately they cannot ship with in California (of course).

You don't need it to do either. However there are advantages.
