How do I know which round?

How do I know what type of Ammo to test out in my new Rem 700 .308 first?

I'm thinking Federal Gold Metal Match but do I start with 175gr or with the 168's?

    Is there another suggestion

i thought the 168gr were the perfect match to the rem700 rifling on the .308's?

and i'm currently in the same boat. the prvi match grade ammo i got is either inconsistent or my gun hates it... cause every shot hits in a random location. now i'm on the hunt for some consistent shooting ammo so i can zero my scope. probably will plop down the the money and get box or two of black hills, hornady ammo or federal match to sight in. then just go back to the prvi to plink for fun.

It depends on what you want to do with your rifle. First off FGMM is the bench mark by which all accuracy tests are run, so stick with FGMM. As to the 168 and 175 issue know that 168s will probably group better between 100 and 300 - thats what they were designed for and they will hold their own out to about 600. Beyond that the 175 shines. Me personally I've always used the 175s for my all around load. I give up maybe 1/4 MOA at 100 but it holds it all the way out whereas 168s open up past about 300 or 400.
I'm only smiling at you while you talk to me because it's hilarious that you really think I give a crap about you.

As I've gotten older I thought I was gaining patience, then I realized I simply don't give a crap.

My 700 Varmint in 308 Win LOVES Speer 125 gr TNT's for anything under 200 yards.. Beyond that I haven't a clue since I rarely go much past that.

FCGM 175gr shoots .5 MOA in my Remmy LTR. 168's shoot 1 MOA. BH shoots something inbetween. I took some apart and found a 1 grain powder charge variance within the same box. This is unacceptable for a round loaded with ball powder.

168 gr bullets are what SD SWAT uses and what My father's likes, though 168 grainers will vary depending on manufacture...ultimately you can only expect so much performance out of factory ammo. if you really want to tune your 700, get set up for reloading.

Roll your own w/ 155gr Scenars

When I put commercial rounds through my 5R, it seemed to like 168gr FGMM but I was only shooting out to 400 yards.

Well, I don't really "PLAN" on going out past 3-500 right now, because I'm just getting into this, and don't want to get in over my head with contemplating alot of the variables that come with longer ranges....

as a side note I went with the 168's.

So you are not going to try 175's at all?
