    Stress Relief Work

Hello all, not sure if this is in the right category but I had a conversation with a colleague that I didn't know the answer to and figure either someone here has experienced it or know someone. He has been contemplating to take Short Term Disability due to high stress at work and needs a break (Mental Stress) he then obviously needs to check with his doctor and probably also refer him to a therapist. His question is will this affect him or red flag him since he is a law abiding gun owner. In today?s world not to sure what is ok since this deals with Mental stress. Thanks. If it doesn?t belong here please delete.

No. 5150 is a couple year ban, 5250 is lifetime. Going to a therapist is a non issue. If he threatens or is alleged to have threatened harm (himself or others), he's probably screwed no matter what for a red flag. But seeing a therapist alone is not an issue.

This is a serious legal question, that I think he should pose to a real lawyer.

My opinion though. This states red flag laws are frivolous, and I believe could be used out of context if someone chose to do so, it’s risky…

My advice, is don't give your employer too many details. If he can coordinate his therapist with his regular MD, just have the leave submitted as "medical leave of absence". I may be wrong, but I don't think your employer under hippa laws is entitled to know the specific diagnosis.

Therapist: Do you own any guns?

Therapist taking notes, should your gun loving friend be concerned, I think so.
