My long time friend passed away and left his collection to his wife. She asked me to help her sell his collection.

He was well off and he has over 30 high end modern rifles/pistols in his collection. Nothing older or relic. At this stage I?m not going to post or list what he has but I do want to put feelers out there for anyone who might be a buyer or know of a buyer who acquires collections of this size or has experience selling such a collection like this. We have a spreadsheet with the complete list that will be provided to vetted buyers.

Talking to a couple dealers as well however a lot of his pistols are off roster so they would sell for much less that what he paid.

I am not making money on this nor do I have any skin in the game. I am simply trying to help his widow who just went through a heck of battle with him this last year fighting spinal cancer and doing what I can to connect her with one maybe two buyers who have the resources to acquire his collection.

What does ?high end? mean? I think you need to post the list so people can assess if it?s worth being ?vetted?

To some people a $5k atlas 2011 is high end and to others it?s not worth considering because it?s only a semi custom gun.

Off roster will sell for more than he paid likely. Out of Ca less is likely. You could consign or put in auction.

I 'third' this, and they have a following that is sure to get you a higher sell price, than an average dealer/retail gun store who is too concerned with stocking shelves full of useless crap merely for the theatrics of looking like a well-decorated brick-and-mortar store, which is really a hobby at most, rather than making a sale on your behalf.

It will just sit in a 'regular' dealer's display case collecting dust until you come pick it up, for lack of a sale - and partly because it gets so much less exposure in that atmosphere, due to 1/1000th of the view-traffic of serious buyers that Lock, Stock, and Barrel provides.

Great group of people, great service, and will make it really easy to do what you're looking to do - they'll even come to you, as they are often making trips to view and take-in collections for consignment.

I suspect it's because he doesn't want to handle the transactions directly himself, one at a time, posting ads, meeting people - start listing what they are and he's setting himself up to get wrangled into answering pms, calls, emails, setting appointments, etc.

Geographic area would be nice if we are considering PPT for off roster pieces.

A third vote for Lock Stock and Barrel, and assuming the pieces are in CA, I believe off roster will still be processed PPT. Hopefully someone is familiar with the fees for using them.

The problem is that she might get disappointed in what she gets, much like people who don't understand how consignment works balk at the percentage the gun shop keeps.

The only way to get the full value is to put in the elbow grease of selling it individually. Anything "bulk" or that includes a third party will cost a lot of money. And rightfully so, they get to do a lot of work and eat all the expenses associated with the sale.

Good luck with the sale, it's a sad occasion.

Auction houses take a big bite though, like 20 or 30 percent.

But they get selling prices that are 20% higher than what you would have gotten on your own, and yet they do all the work, research, write-up, photos, handle the transaction, dealing with customers, afford buyers the ability to pay with a credit-card (which also invites higher final sales/bid pricing), they do the packing/shipping, insurance on it - so you get the price you would have achieved anyway because they have a larger audience, resources, and following that will invite a 20% higher selling price.

And if something goes wrong with the buyer/transaction, they guarantee the sale price be paid to you regardless, and then they take up the task of trying to recoup the failed transaction - it's not your concern if the buyer doesn't follow through, you get your money from the auction sale that closed as final either way.

You get what you would have likely gotten anyway, maybe even higher - and yet they did ALL the work.
