    CHFC 2023 Fish Fry

Our 76th Annual Fish Fry is coming up on Saturday, July 15. We serve from noon until 5 PM, with a big raffle drawing at 5PM. Live Country music, a bake sale and beer and wine for sale. Every meal purchased gets a ticket for the door prize. I am not sure what the door prize is this year - in the past it has been high-end grill and smokers, two bikes, freezers, etc. We serve over 1000 meals that day!
I have attached a flyer with the map below, as well as a few pictures of our site and part of the crew preparing the fish.

Several CalGunners have attended and can vouch for the quality as well as the location. We are at the end of a small private drive...past a couple trucking yards and shops as well as the Pigeon Club. Between the river and the 710 freeway. We have been there a long time. The address is 1625 Sportsman Dr, Compton, CA 90221. You can google earth it for aerial views of or grounds.

A picture of my son dipping the fish in milk prior to breading. Each filet is hand dipped and breaded. The breading, tartar sauce and coleslaw are also handmade from recipes that haven't changed in 76 years.

We get lots of compliments about the food, the event in general and our grounds. There is also a Bake Sale, Bingo for cash and prizes, 50/50 and other raffles and more!

The music is fantastic and lots of folks dance. I am not sure if the dunk tank will be there, but there are tons of kids' games and a bounce house. This is a fun and safe family event. Even dogs are welcome - but please clean up after them as needed and keep them on a leash.

I m sorry you can't make it. My old honor Scouting group, the Tribe of Tahquitz, has their annual Summer Camp staff reunion on the same Saturday as our Fish Fry every year...but I'd rather spend the day in a hot kitchen, breading fish all day. At least my hands get silky soft from dipping them milk all day.....

It is going to be hot this weekend - don't cook on Saturday! Come enjoy handbreaded fish, fries, coleslaw and ice cream on our shaded acreage and lawns. Bingo (cash and other prizes,) raffles, kids' games and a bounce house!

We had a good turnout - I think it was 1068 meals served. We have done as many as 1400, but this was still good. We had a breeze most of the day that kept things pleasant. I won a 12 volt car fridge cooler in the raffle. I was so busy I didn't even know that until we were packing up to leave and my wife told me.

My Uncle and Grandma lived in Compton in the 50s. The only white household at that point since they had lifted the "restricted" real estate laws. We used to visit every weekend. Played over the line and scooters with the neighborhood kids.

I remember the cool sea breezes in that part of LA

I lived in Lynwood for a while in the late 70s/early 80s, and it was a mixed neighborhood, Everyone got along just fine and the kids all played together. George and Barbara Bush lived at 624 S. Santa Fe Ave in Compton in 1949.

The CHFC was founded in 1946, and our clubhouse started building in its original location in 1948, by a group of businessmen and tradesmen, and there were still whites living there then. The building was moved to its current location in 1952.

We almost always have a cool breeze coming up the riverbed. Combined with our large shade trees and huge lawns, it is usually pleasant there.
