Land for private range - where to look on Ca or Nevada?

Likely a pipe dream BUT it would be fun to find some land to make my own private range.

I was in a training and one of the speakers has a spot in Placerville. Then I thought Nevada cuz it?s still driveable. Having a smaller house would be cool too, might be able to split with friends for a camping spot.

California has 58 counties. Each of those counties has their own laws (rules) about where you can shoot. For some counties, the rules are super simple: You can shoot everywhere (typical of northeast and Sierra areas), or you can shoot nowhere (San Francisco county is an example, as it is coterminous with the city). For most counties, it is a mixed bag. In most cases, you can find a map with "no shoot zones" on the county web site, typically at the sheriff's or planning department.

There are also rules about minimum distance to other residences, to boundaries of your land, and so on. Those set a floor under the size of the parcel you need to purchase.

Armed with these maps, your current location, and some knowledge of the geography (hills are useful, for backstops and sound isolation), you can start looking at real estate web sites, to see what's available, and what the typical costs are. Expect to pay anywhere from $20,000 to a low millions, mostly depending on location, and whether the land is also suitable for developing (a house or a cabin).

I lease some property for one. Way easier and probably cheaper. Leasing allowed me to get the property within an hour from my house where the property value is cost prohibitive to purchase. No point in driving hours to shoot. If you go that far you might as well just drive to a good public shooting area.
