What is the difference between AUG type rifle by MSAR and Styer?

I've been reading about the AUG type rifles and came across these two types of manufacturer: MSAR and Styer. Based on what I have read: Styer manufactures the AUG rifle prior to MSAR but I have also read in several periodicals that MSAR refers to their AUG rifle as "Steyr AUG". Is "Steyr AUG" a type of rifle but it was re manufactured by MSAR? If MSAR and Styer version are of a different platform and parts are not compatible between them; which platform is most desirable to own? Lastly, the CA band specifically identifies Steyer AUG on the assault rifle band list. Is Steyer the manufacturer of the full auto AUG type rifle and are MSAR and Steyr type of AUG rifle legal in CA?

First of all, you can't own an AUG in CA. It's listed as an assault weapon by name in CA. Only the Steyr USR is "off list" and legal in the proper CA confirguation. The MSAR is a clone of the Steyr AUG and has nothing to do with the company. The latest generation of of the MSAR is compatible with AUG magazines, and does away with the forward assist of the original MSAR.

Thanks for the clarification and quick response. Too bad these are on the band list. The mechanism on these AUG rifles are very intriguing and has a unique design. It stands out from the common AR types.

        AUG is banned by name.
USR is NOT banned by name. Legal in CA.
MSAR is NOT banned by name. Legal in CA.

        They are really fun guns.

Thanks for the live demo. I'll have to get one of those. Would you recommend the USR over the MSAR?

You will probably be able to get into a MSAR before you would be able to get into a USR. Although, there is a guy in the For Sale Forums selling a USR. As for collectability, a USR may be worth more in the long run.

Awesome!! Thanks everyone for your input and recommendations. I generally hold on to my toys to pass on to my boys, so I would lean on towards getting the USR because of the collectability aspect assuming both are equal in reliability.

Why didn't US-mil adopt bullpup configuration? Isn't a short rifle w/ long barrel (when compared to traditional layout) a good thing?
