Expat in sticky situation (needs ammo)

I am a Nevada resident who still works in California. For the next two weeks, I will be working straight in California. However, at the end of the two weeks, I have a precision rifle class at the Sacramento Valley shooting center.

Now, I had bought my gun, equipment and ammo with me, But I recall from the last class I took, somehow the Hornady Match ammo I used did not shoot very well out of my rifle and it did not chrono anywhere close to predicted. The instructor told me to use another brand next time.

Of course stupid me brought Hornady Match ammo this time!

I have a non-real ID CA identification card and I have a passport with me. What do CA FFLs accept to have ammo transferred to me?

Which mail order companies would ship ammo to CA?

Your shooting partners can legally share ammo with you at the match

If you still have a valid ca coe you should be able to get ammo transfer by FFL as per what’s written on the doj page

Also your instructor will probably work with you to receive ammo you need for the class

Are you a California resident? The first line of your post says that you are not. For example, I would guess that you have a Nevada driver's license. The CA DMV is probably aware that you have that, and it knows that you are not a California resident. Since the DoJ checks the driver's license or ID against the DMV database, and if you have obtained a Nevada license, I think you're just out of luck and can not buy ammo in this state.

The only exception I can see would be having both CoE and 03FFL and bypassing the ammo background check completely.

This is your best bet. Call ahead and see who has the ammo you want to use. Sac to Reno is about a 1.5-2 hour drive, so if you hustle (watch out for CHP's, they heavily patrol I80), you could make it to Reno Friday evening. I think Scheels stays open until 9pm and maybe Sportsmans Warehouse does too

I do. And this may be the solution. Another is to have the wife bring the ammo from home, not something she looks forward to doing.

Out of state residents can buy ammo at a shooting range in california if that range sells ammo. You just have to use of the ammo at that range and can't leave with any left over.

A resident of another state can buy ammo in California. You just have to buy it at the range that you are shooting at. Plan on using it all up since you cannot take any leftovers with you. I suspect that the range that is holding you class sells ammo.

What is "not very well"? 1 MOA vs 1/2 MOA? Was it close enough? What do your notes say vs "I recall from the last class" on performance?

Didn't the other "instructor" from your previous class teach you these things and you just forgot? Or was this loosely certified "instructor" remiss in not teaching these things?

Regardless, if you have to use the Hornady as a last option in this class, use the issues as a learning opportunity.

I was below 1 MOA, but the standard deviation on the chrono (over 10 shots) was greater than expected for match ammo.

It was a new rifle, less than 40 shots fired before the std deviation test. Could that have anything to do with it?

I’m running out of time. I’ll stick with the Hornady and see what happens.
