Why are so many guys afraid of their AR's / AK's

I mean, jeez...not a week goes by without someone posting which ranges are okay to take their OLL AR or AK????

Man!!!!, I take my registered AR or MAK-90 or FAL or etc to ranges all over and never have had a problem (knock on wood).

In the 15 plus years I've collected and shot my guns, I've only had about 2-3 rangemasters ask me about my gun and if it was registered. Never had I have a LE question me or anything....Even when my FAL/Sten went auto at Jackson Arms while I was shooting with FBI guys to my right and Sheriff's guys to my left. (but that's another story).

So what the heck are you guys afraid of? If it's legal....shoot it....when did the next generation of gun owners become such pansies.

People are just afraid of getting their guns taken away because oficers arent aware of the OLL situation....Id hate to loose my rifle like that especially when I look at all the receipts from when I built it!

Some people are still new to their AR.. and just dont have the confidence if confronted. Not everyone can say "Hey! Its Registered"

          Agreed

Agreed. I think many (Me included) don't want to be the one that becomes the "test" case. Its expensive and time consuming, etc.....

But I think most are not afraid they are just being prudent and trying too avoid confrontations that they are not comfortable with. If someone else is more comfortable and has done their homework and is confident they can explain the laws and OLL's etc. to LEO's then its a diff. story.

I'm still doing my homework (Plus my OLL's are not built out yet) and getting all the key facts memorized and would prefer to avoid confrontations till I have all my ducks in a row. (Makes it easier to shoot them down that way)

I shoot mine at public ranges. At nearly 41, I'm secure enough to stand my ground for my legal rights...even if that ground is toe to toe.

Give it some time, we have to get the public used to seeing these 'evil' easily recognizable rifles again gradually.

the shock to their systems would be more than they could take.

Hmmm interesting view. I think you might be on to something. Give it enough time and people will get use to seeing this. It will become normal.

I've never been "confronted" at the range(San Gabriel, Lytle Creek and West End). To me and some others, it's a non-issue. But to the under30 crowds and those less fortunate who couldn't own one b4 the ban, it is a big issue. I agree it is a confidence thing with new owners. It's a tool and it shoots tiny bullets. Don't be afraid of everything u read on gun boards. To a lot of old timers, mouse guns gets a casual glance, if any.

I have, and the RO asked about my extended takedown pin, which I then refered him to 10%

Not scared at all of a confrontation, I am ready to fight for my rights.

Desensitization is the name of the game. I've been running around showing off my OLL's since January, when I got my first one built.

It's also important for you to carry along some literature for the folks who go looking at your rifle curiously. It's not enough to just get them "used" to seeing it, you want to leave them with a strong feeling that the rifles are clear, and preferably give them the resources to show others. That's why I carry along a few of these, in my gun box: http://www.cheapspeech.com/ar-flier.pdf

I think there is a misconception in the above post that the public thus far has not seen any black rifles. Gentlemen, there are tens of thousands of legally registered AR's, FAL's, etc that have been owned before 2000 in this state. They have all been regularly taken to the range for quite some time. I've never been to a range in the past 10 years where there's not been some sort of military style semi-auto.

The newbies have to understand that just because they are new to the OLL game not everyone else is too. No one will be frightened by your rifle. If your rifle is legal then that's all that matters.

I think the only people who ever have a reaction are the occational once-a-year shooters who sight in their hunting rifles in the autumn. To them I just say "Naw, this isn't a machine gun. It's just a look-a-like with different parts inside."

I've never been asked about my "registered" ones. And I've never been asked about my OLL either. Just make sure you know what you have and how you are able to have it and stop worrying. Typical ROs wouldn't know the difference anyway. The last time I went to Angeles shooting ranges, an RO told my wife to take the mag out of my OLL. She said "it doesnt come out, look." He then asked her to open the action and she replied "it is open, see" as she pivots the two halves apart and shows him the bolt was retracted part way. She was on a roll! He shutup and walked off. The next line break he could be heard shouting over the PA "...if your magazines ARE NOT removable, blah blah blah!" My wife was laughing the rest of the day.

Look at it this way taking a registered AW to the range is a lot easier to explain to LEO'S in the field than showing your registered AW papers.

To go home with your registered AW after an encounter with a LEO is a lot more likely than going home after an encounter with a LEO with a OLL.

its not always easy to educate the LEO's in the field when the majority of those around you are saying That's illegal.

I haven't hit the range yet with my OLL builds that I just completed and I can honestly say that I'm not worried about LEO contact either. I guess we will see what will be after this weekend.
