Recommendations for Target Shooting on Public Land

I am looking for options to target practice on public land within a 1-2 hour drive from Sacramento. I've done a little bit of research and found the Bureau of Land Management website states "There are no designated target shooting sites managed by the BLM, but recreational shooting opportunities are available on undeveloped lands". Does anyone have recommendations on public land for target practice? I'm tired of not being able to draw etc at local ranges. It would be nice to be able to set a folding table , targets, and shoot!

Public Lands in California offer a wide variety of recreational opportunities, including hunting, fishing and recreational target shooting. 14 million acres available for hunting and recreational shooting350 miles of river available for fishingClick here for information regarding current California fire and target shooting restrictions.

Find a piece of desert and blast away. …you might have to drive a bit however.

In no particular order closest to Sac are Cow Mountain near Ukiah, Oroville shooting range, and Candy Rock Quarry outside or Murphys. You can get directions and locations for each through google. You can also look at the shooting restrictions for the National Forest lands through their website for the different forest areas near by.

I believe Sac Valley allows drawing from holster at the cowboy action range? Might need to tag along with a voting member there.

Order some maps from the BLM office. BLM land if far more forgiving then any National forest land. But to be honest you don't have much BLM land in Northern California

Range #2 - eight "action pistol" bays, three @ 50 yds, five @ 25 yds (IIRC). You have to go with a member to do their orientation/safety class (4 hours on a Saturday), then go with a member to shoot on those ranges (unless you're doing some type of competition).

I never thought about that. I might consider it but think it would be too hot! I'm thinking of a place with shade and a wall where I can place my targets.

These look interesting, thank you. Candy Rock appears to be closest to what I am looking for and there is even a swimming hole to take a dip in after shootin'.

Sounds good to me but I prefer to shoot in solitude. Tired of the ranges....they give me anxiety

Get onx maps. No one should reveal their favorite spot on here. To many will go and trash it. Find your own it is not hard. Try blm map site.
