Gun range/store paranoia?

Went shooting at the range with a guy who works with me. I am a member there and we had a nice time. (The Tussey tuned series 70 was ripping a ragged hole!!) After shooting we are looking at the guns for sale and my friend casually asks about OLL's. (He has one and I have 6 and we are building them up with parts from ten percent and FBMG) Guy behind the counter says "what AR's?" twice, and then he launches into a paranoid interrogation "who do you really work for?" "WHO DO YOU REALLY WORK FOR?" "why are you asking about AR's?" "you gotta talk with the owner about that stuff" Now I can understand if we were pressing the issue and trying to make him say or do something wrong, but geez all we did was ask if they had any for sale. Guess the DOJ has made their presence known among the FFL's?
