First time at an outdoor public range

I don't care much for shooting around strangers although I do shoot at indoor ranges once in a while. I do most of my shooting in the Mojave..

I just got back from Route 66 shooting park in San Bernardino CA. I got a 50 yard private bay for 2 hrs.

I could have spent the 2hrs picking up brass and not made a dent in it. It was crazy. I asked one of the Range officers about picking up the brass, he said he didn't care one way or another.

223/556, 45acp, 9mm, 10mm, 7.62/39, 308...plus other.

Are all outdoor ranges like this?

No, most of them keep the brass and don't want you loading up. I reload so I might have to visit the range you speak of. Thanks

I like to tinker so prepping 223/556 brass is for me. I'm meeting a buddy there on Monday. I'm going to bring a 5 gal pail this time.

I would show up with a snow shovel and a truck full of trash cans! I would also fill the space around the bins. I’m going to have to stop at Home Depot and see who wants to shovel for me because I’m allergic to shovels.

Outdoor ranges don't give a f for shell casing except shotgun hulls.

Cause they know there will be brass peckers to come by and clean for them.

That reminds me, need to pack my mesh net to collect brass

It's $36.00 per person ...they say 50 yards but it's more like 45.. I'm not sure about weekend rates


After your times up you can use the steel target range and 100 yard rifle range. I don't think you can shoot magnum rds at the pistol range.

FWIW, they had a ton of factory ammo for sale...

I used to shoot out at the Oroville public range - free of course. Concrete benches, no shade, one pit toilet - there was a 4' metal gong out at 600m I think, maybe farther.
Back in the day you could literally wade through spend shotgun shells and steel cases. One certain people were elected, brass was almost always scavenged clean. For a bit there was a group of Hmong ladies that's would scavenge and recycle all the steel and brass, and would get uncomfortably close to the firing line, but they'd fill a minivan with buckets. Now I think it gets bulldozed monthly, so it doesn't get as crazy - shooters aren't as loose with their brass nowadays.
