Prescription shooting glasses

Hey fellas, I've been thinking about these for a while now. With my readers I see the sights great but not so great down range.

I've never had any script glasses, just my cheap readers.

For you fellas that wear them, are you able to see the sights and down range good enough?

I'm even thinking about using them for golfing.

Get your prescription figured out and then look at Hunter's HD Gold glasses. $$$ but excellent glasses

If your eyesight needs correcting and you want to see both close and far, you will need something like bi-focals or progressive lenses. I asked my doc for a prescription to basically have a focal point an arms length away (basically, handgun sight distance). Reading glasses focus was too close. I had them made as safety glasses and they worked great for a long time. However, distance was fuzzy.

Ive heard of some people getting a different focal point for each eye. So dominant eye to the end of your outstretched pointer and non-dom eye gets distance. They said they were really happy with the outcome. I havent done this myself; so I cant comment from personal experience.

I?m both near and far sighted, wear progressive lenses sometimes (which I hate) and just distance glasses sometimes. With glasses I can see ?well enough?, not enough to be happy but enough to hit what I?m aiming at. Buckhorn style irons are difficult, aperture style sights work better. A nice scope helps a great deal in low contrast situations. Even at 25 yards small targets with low contrast are almost invisible with aperture sights even while wearing glasses (ex: red dot sticker on white paper background).

It?s not perfect, but my vision isn?t getting better and I?m not getting the surgery so it?s a lot better than the alternative. My next set will probably be bifocals, to see if those work better for me than the progressives. Either way I can still see clays and birds well enough, so I have that going for me at least.

If you were up here in NorCal, I'd refer you to my eye doctor. He's a cool guy and a competition shooter. He keeps an airsoft CZ in the office to help fellow shooters figure out an Rx.

PS-Wife had custom Rx insert for her shooting glasses and the eye doc wasn't a shooter, so it didn't turn out all that great for her. It worked, but not good.

this is me when i shoot iron sights in competition. my dominant eye has the Rx for the front sight, while my non-dominant eye has plano (plain).

while bi-focals or progressives seem to work, i will say from experience - it will not be optimal in more dynamic shooting circumstances. one would need to do some funny eye/neck/head movements to align the eyes to appropriate RX in the lens.

You might consider a reverse bi-focal. This is where they put the bifocal window at the top of the lens instead of at the bottom...and this is what you would use for viewing your front sight post. The rest of the lens is for distance.

But you REALLY need to find a good eye doctor that has experience fitting shooters. He can go over your options and make recommendations based on your peepers.

Consider contact lenses, not sure if they would be a viable solution in your case though.

Tried that too... Good enough for static indoor range type of shooting.

Anything more dynamic, or shall I say, training classes, etc. that have shooting from non-conventional positions - it is not optimal due to limited field of view of the lens.

I have been doing this for almost a decade now. I have 20/20 vision but need reading glasses. The front sight on my pistol is a blur.

I took my pistol to my optometrist and adjusted my dominant eye lens just strong enough to see the front sight clearly(full reading glassed would not work). The other eye is clear.

Next I bought a pair of Gatorz glasses and sent them along with my prescription to Hunters HD Gold. They replaced the lens on the Gatorz with my prescription.

Been very happy.

I wear prescription by-focals. The progressive ones with no lines.

I'm .225 readers, and 20/40 sight for distance.

With practice you can get use to sighting in the handgun with your readers, then split micro-second transition to your distance glass...

I have it down and shoot pretty nice groups.

Don't over think it ... just get your regular prescription and how it goes.

Yes, I have astigmatism and also can't see well far, it gets a little blurry but once I put my glasses on, my astigmatism is gone and I can now see the Red dot perfectly. I have a Holosun red dot sight. Without my glasses, the red dot will look like a splatter circle (it will not look like a round circle and it will not be solid). With my glasses, I can also see the night sight on my other firearm and yes, I can see the targets down range well.
