Caliber choice for 70# female with a cow elk tag?

If you take into account that there are reduced recoil factory loads for the 30-06, that could be an all-around good choice and allow room for growth over time. Rifle weight will play a big role....the heavier the rifle, the less the felt recoil. This article could prove enlightening (no pun intended).Do not try and bend the spoon, that's impossible. Instead, only try to realize the truth...there is no spoon.Comment

Whatever you guys decide on; practice practice practice! Helped track a small, young cow elk that someone got a gut shot on at 70 yards or so with a 300RUM. Animal went literally for miles/over mountains before being lost to the woods (and probably wolves). Caliber is definitely not a replacement for accuracyStay classy, CGF and Calguns.Originally posted by bwiese[BTW, I have no problem seeing DEA Agents and drug cops hanging from ropes, but that's a separate political issue.]Comment

Just buy a 308 if that's what you are thinking. She can practice with light bullets/loads and won't feel the difference in the shot on the elk. I don't think the difference in recoil between a 308 and 6.5 cm will be noticable, but either would be fine. This article in the 243 for elk is fair.

The lack of understanding on how animals die and how bullets cause damage is amazing to me. 243 with a good bullet, a sufficient impact velocity and an accurate shot are all you need. Weight and speed do not make up for bad shot placement. Lower recoil leads to more accurate shots for all people.

Get a standard caliber. .243/ .270/ .308 easier to get ammo for. Since your not in Ca no need for non leadComment

I am a new conversion to muzzle brakes. My 8# 30 Nosler, with the brake, recoils less than my 9# .308 Win. I would feel very comfortable letting my little girl shoot a 243, 6.5 CR or .308 Win with a brake, no problem. I would feel comfortable shooting a cow elk with a .243 Win, no problem either.Comment

I’ve had lots of success with the bog pod tripods and mono pod. Since you’re guiding her it will be easy for you to be quick with the sticks. Makes a world of difference. It’s very difficult for a small shooter to hold a rifle steady especially when excited and gassed from hiking.
A .243 wouldn’t be a bad choice. She can use it for pretty much everything and the recoil is nothing. It’s all about shot placement. She’s going to want a light rifle and .308 might be a bit much in a very light gun.Last edited by deckhandmike; 04-22-2023, 3:25 PM.Comment

I lived in Colorado for many years and I would highly recommend a .270 as it has a mild recoil and is good for any big game in North America. That’s all."When injustice becomes law, resistance becomes duty"Comment

If you get a .308 maybe get a muzzlebrake on it. I put one on my 300 wm and it reduced recioil to a 30/06.Comment
