I managed to dodge moving to the Bay Area a few years ago.

Unfortunately, due to malfeasance on the part of her old boss, my wife is having trouble finding a job on the East Coast. While I'm sure there is some sort of legal action that can be taken, but it's never going to happen. Her community is small and anyone who sues an institution gets blacklisted unless they check the "woke" boxes. Blacklisting means working at a third tier institution for a few years and no academic work ever again.

I actually do like SF. I know, I'm weird, but the food is great and there's lots to do. But, one needs to remove the politics, wear blinders, and always have steel toed boots on to plow through the mess. The drug needles won't penetrate the soles. Soak your soles in water to get the poop off; I dodged two human turds last weekend. It was a close thing and I could have died by rogue trolley.

I'll probably look at living in San Mateo County since the recently released SF carry guidelines are very silly.

I have a sheeet-ton of guns. I'm thinking I will leave most of them out of state with family. I'll put them in PolyGun Bags for long term storage. For the remaining guns, I'll bring a few for carry and the rest for fun.

1) Is there a fee to register a gun in CA? If so, how much?
2) I think off-roster handguns can be registered. Is that true?
3) What do I do with my ammo? Can it be imported?
4) Any modern long guns that do not meet the criteria for the Calguns rifle & shotgun charts will be stored with family. I'll probably just bring a Ruger 10/22, a shotgun, and a lever action rifle.
5) Does anyone know if guns are prohibited by landlords?

Within 60 days of establishing residency in CA, new residents of CA are required to report all of the firearms they brought with them to CA. [PC 27560(a)]
This is accomplished by submitting a completed New Resident Report of Firearm Ownership to CA DOJ BOF. The fee to do this is $19.

2.
A new resident of CA can legally bring any type of CA legal firearm they intend to keep with them to CA. [PC 17000(a)(7)]

CA legal firearm means it is not considered an assault weapon, machine gun, destructive device, or generally prohibited weapon. [PC 17000(a)(10),(11),(12),(14),(15)]

So, yes, a new resident of CA can legally bring CA legal off-Roster handguns that they intend to keep with them to CA.

It is not legal to bring any large capacity (11+ round) magazines or large capacity magazine parts kits to CA. [PC 32310(a) and 32311(a)]

OK, twist my arm. I guess I'll pick up a few HK P30's, some Glocks, a CZ P07 and maybe Shadow II, and a few P210's if the CA handgun roster isn't gone by the time I get ready to move.

It looks like aspects of the roster were challenged, not the roster itself. But, even if true, then the effect will be the same as what we have here in Maryland: a roster with everything on it. The practical result is a 3-6 month delay in the sale of a new model after release. Yes, it's annoying, but the guns typically trickle in the next quarter.

Check up on the ccw thread for San Mateo county if that is a priority. To combat the normal doom and gloom (not saying it?s unjustified, just not always helpful) the weather is nice, and right now it?s beautiful since we got rain for a change. Also the schools are good at least and the food as you mentioned is solid.

Ammo is a pain in San Mateo county particularly. There?s a big 5 or three that sometimes have ammo, a shop in Burlingame, San Bruno, or Mountain View. I suggest bringing a healthy supply based on your storage capacity, otherwise it?s a drive. The local shooting range is shut down (not looking particularly likely to reopen at any point in the foreseeable future), so it?s also a drive to the east bay or South Bay to get any trigger time.


Also if your wife bites on that deal you may have lucked out, San Mateo rent prices are bad for CA. Let me know if you want details on schools, neighborhoods, etc., happy to share my experience. Most landlords don?t specifically mention firearms in contracts that I?ve seen, but review any lease carefully.

Firearm safety certificate for handguns, hunting license would suffice for a long gun if you don?t have a fsc (but half the ffls ask for fsc anyways). Test is easy, good for 5 years afaik.

Just move into neighboring cities like Daly City, Pacifica, South SF, or quieter areas like San Rafael etc. Much rather deal with commuting to SF than living in it.

OP sounds a little too toney for Castro Valley and with bowling, peewee golf and Friday night high school football the only entertainment after dark he’s going to get bored there. No, I think steel toed boots and San Francisco might be just right for him, parts of the Sunset are still livable if you have off-street parking, there’s always Caucasian Acres (Walnut Creek) if city life is too burdensome, but they got nit picky cops that hand out speeding tickets for 29 in a 25 but let the Oakland youts ride in on BART to riot, loot-n-shoot with nary a concern.
