    Talk about perfect timing

    Hello Calgunners.
I hope all is well. For my homework assignment, my professor asked us to write about something we felt passionate about. Of course, I will talk about guns. I love to take the commies at my school head-on.
This assignment was about finding an argument that can be used against my opinion...
I'll let you all read it

Many people who oppose guns and those who want to regulate them further lack knowledge and fear weapons. I can see why someone would be against guns because of the sheer amount of stupid people in the world. I don't think everyone should have kids and the same with guns. Some people should not have access to firearms due to their lack of common sense, proper training, and lack of responsibility. Then we proceed to what I believe is the biggest problem the entire world is facing...mental health. Many parents disregard their kids along with firearms (I don't think any household with kids under 18 should have readily accessible guns). When you have a mentally ill kid, you need to diagnose him and treat him as such properly.

Society is collapsing; we are beginning to see the disintegration of the family nucleus, values, traditions, identities, and many other basic human concepts.

Many people had guns early on, and society would not think much of them. People saw and understood the need for them after many saw the horrors of an authoritarian government like the third reich and the USSR could cause. We all know that a fascist government begins with the government conducting massive gun confiscations, then since citizens are unarmed, they are left defenseless. Please remember that the second amendment was implemented to protect citizens from a tyrannical government, not to hunt. Back then, people were more respectful, responsible, hard-working, and decent.

Today I cannot wrap my head around the notion that some people believe there are more than two genders; some say that men can be a woman and vice versa. They even say that men can become 'pregnant" This is absolute insanity; we are the most "diverse," most "equitable," most "loving" most "free" generation that has ever existed, but we see record numbers of suicides, depression rates are at a record high, a considerable percentage of my age suffers from anxiety and other issues. We are living in a dystopian world, and I fear my generation will only get worse. I am afraid of the radicalization of the left, which is very popular among the youth, with many politicians like AOC.

Many people have a distorted view of life; thus, they lack the emotional, mental, and responsible attitude you need to be around firearms. You also see the youth willing to hurt, shoot and kill people for the most insane reasons, like verbal arguments. Gone are the days of the gentleman where one could talk about it, or if needed, we would have a friendly fistfight outside and then shake hands. We then also have the lunatics who go on shooting sprees; this is just disturbing. How anyone can kill people for no reason is just insane. I still will like to believe that the majority of people are like me, willing to lend a hand to help others at any moment. Having a background in Law enforcement, I have seen a lot of different scenarios and people living at their peak and their lowest point in life.

He then answers with this... After giving me the total points for the assignment

You?ve identified an extraordinary claim from the other side: mental health concerns. You also mentioned children?both of which people use to argue in favor of gun regulation. Another claim you might want to consider is a ?simple? helpful point about the ?cost? of gun violence in the USA outweighing the ?benefits? of unrestricted ownership. (For the record, since you expressed interest in my opinion, I?m a gun owner *and* someone who favors additional restrictions on sales and possession.)

Then fast forward to today and we have the Nashville shooter who is a man or woman don't really know lol.
    RIP to all who died.
We need armed people in schools asap. And we should allow CCW on campus too. But this will be another day another discussion. This is a college in southern Cali my professor is a lefty btw

I have a number of degrees (more than a few)

I understand your passion and youth regardless of the topic you are enthusiastic about.

My success in academics improved dramatically the moment (basically grad school) when I realized the objective was not to argue or change anyone's mind, but simply submit a graded assignment that fell inside the rules of the coursework.

I ended up not getting wrapped up in my passions, and focused on the project at hand in order to simply turn in the required work that resulted in a final grade, that eventually was part of the over all degree requirements.

This approach best helped me allocate my time based on the weight and importance of the project, verses letting my passion dominate potentially low grade weight assignments at the cost of neglecting more significant projects I was less interested in.
Before there was Polymer there was Accuracy.

I always find the "Gun Violence" argument to be ridiculous, simply because you have countries like the UK who unleash a swat team on a guy who MAY have a knife but they have next to no "Gun Violence". The "I'm a gun owner *and* someone who favors additional restrictions on sales and possession" is like saying "I'm not XYZ Phobic, I know lots of XYZ people."

I work behind enemy lines (University) and the quickest way to a get a A grade in any course is to first find out what your professor wants/expects you to prove in your paper and make sure that is what you do. No matter what you believe, make sure your paper proves the professors point and easy A, if you try to argue opposite their belief, expect both a lower grade and pushback.

I understand the point you guys are trying to make. But Surprisingly, I still have a 3.93 GPA. I have never felt that professors have deducted points due to my opinions. But I will try to be more low-key. I'm just tired of hiding my opinions.. But I will try to be better.

                  Consider yourself lucky.

You dont have a "V" next to your name on the profs student list.

Them draft dodging hippies from the 60's are still teaching college... and having a "V" for Veteran hurts a lot more than it helps.

I did argue pro gun once in an english class. It was the 'slippery slope' anti gun argument.

Prof read a paper 'then why not let them have missiles, and tanks and nukes and blah blah...."

He saw the disgust on my face. I'm only persuaded by logic... He asked me what I thought and I told him the paper is worthless. it does nothing to persuade me because there is no fact or logic involved.

I went on to say I parody the exact opposite argument. Which I made up off the top of my head.. He asked me about it and:

It went something like " guns are bad. Guns kill people. We should ban guns. Once all the guns are gone, we'll need to ban crossbows, bows, swords, knifes, spears.... because people will use those to kill people. Then we need to ban bats and sticks and rocks and bricks.

Bricks are bad!!!!!! WE NEEED TO BAN BRICKS!!!!!

Students questioned bricks... and I said there are still places in this world where you can be stoned to death. Rock/brick same thing.

To be honest, Leave the Transgender stuff out of it. Its irrelevant to the issue of Gun rights and is a distraction. It also makes you look like youre all over the place. Stick to a few solid points and do a little more research backed up with facts. College level papers cant be based on "back then" and "we all know" type of statements. Also dont make vague statements like "Many people have a distorted view of life", be specific, and back it up with evidence. Your argument will be much stronger. Write a paper as if the reader has no idea how authoritarian regimes disarmed people initially, or that the second amendment was designed as a defense against a tyranical government. WE know that, but not everybody does. Good luck!
