    Pro Gun Control

I've been looking for anti's arguments that show gun control as working and being needed. So far I can't find anything at all. Sometimes I'll find an anti on the news but then a pro will come on and debate and win.

Outside of the general media spewing their garbage and misinformation, is there any convincing statements from their camp?

I think their logic is really simple and can be characterized as follows, as flawed as it is:

1.) Guns are used in crimes.
2.) Outlaw guns and there won't be any guns.
3.) No guns, no guns can be used in crimes.

In other words, their logic is, "If we take away the toilets, everyone will stop ****ting."

I understand what they THINK will happen, I just can't find any propaganda that's convincing.

        It doesn't exist.

It's the old "we have to do something, anything, and this is at least something!" argument.

To them, it doesn't matter if it's actually effective in controlling crime, as long as it does something about guns. It's all just BS.

          That's about it.

Pro-control folks don't want to live in a world where guns are necessary. That's scary, and disturbs the fluffy bunnies.

So, if we take away the guns, no one will need guns, and violence will go away, and the fluffy bunnies will gambol in the sun.

Foxes like bunnies, and foxes don't need guns.

I often recommend the Yale Cultural Cognition Project as a source of information on why gun control seems reasonable to some people.

(BTW, locosway, I agree with the sentiment in your .sig, but you would have a very difficult time finding the quote - or its earlier variant with 'swords' instead of 'guns' - in the works of T. Jefferson. Seems to be a case of 'come up with pithy saying, attribute to someone who might be authoratative'.)

The real bottom line for the Anti's is "it makes them feel safer." We know that it is a flawed premise. However it is their perception. Unfortuantely, you cannot overcome a perception with logic. It is their perception and it is right (even though it may be 100% wrong). Unfortunately, the only way to change a perception is through experience.

UCLA, you just made my day. LOL!
The way some gunshop clerks spout off, you'd think that they invented gunpowder and the repeating rifle, and sat on the Supreme Court as well.

I had a quote of the day some time ago that said what my sig does. So I went looking at Jefferson quotes and it was there.

I don't want to misquote people, is there a place that shows his actually quotes?

I read an article a while back that posed some reasonable argument. It argued for a full ban on guns. While accepting that it would not be immediately effective, the author of the article argued that over 200 years or so the guns left over from the ban would become worthless and therefore no longer widely used in crime.
I suppose if we argue from a 200 year standpoint (2209 AD) or even a 100 year standpoint any argument may seem reasonable. That being said, knives and steroids are also very effective in crimes. So are groups known as gangs. Crime will never go away no matter what tools are used. A car could be used as a weapon as well but its use to the general public keeps it from being banned. The same can be said for guns.
