What to do with odds and ends firearms?

I was going through the safes the other day and it got me thinking why do I even have some of the items within?.

There are firearms with purpose (SHTF, home defense, etc.) but then there?s a whole bunch of other stuff that?I don?t know, kind of feels like it?s just taking up space.

Example:

My two .357 mag firearms, an IMI Timberwolf and a Colt Trooper Mk III, along with about 500 rounds, just sit there and take up space. I have shot each maybe twice, and I doubt I have any more than 50 rounds through each. They?re cool to look at and admire but they live in the back of a safe and rarely see daylight.

There are others, and a part of me thinks I should divest myself of them and focus my horde on more examples of fewer types, if that makes any sense. I?m thinking, for example, enough G19s and ARs for each member of the family, along with mags and ammo, and collect 1911s and AKs only, because they have something special in my minds eye.

That would mean selling off a variety of 9mm handguns and buying more G19s?and selling off a bunch of different ARs and buying multiple copies of one, to standardize. The problem is that the ?odds and ends? are quality items that are hard to let go. I always second guess myself when push comes to shove and worry that I will have regrets. The other problem is the stupid 5 sales limit, which would drag out the process of selling.

Has anyone else out there done that, or thought about it?

Just in case:
5 "transactions" per year so can sell/trade multiple guns in one transaction.

I do not have any duplicates, still in the fun mode rather than prep. for SHTF.
I just finished cleaning them all so shot each one at some point over the last several months.

OP, if you’re thinking about selling, it’s time to sell.

I’ve had all kinds of ‘odds and ends’ over the years. I move things in/out of my collection all the time. Nothing is sacred.

If I think it’s cool/useful/interesting, it stays. If I’m done with it, it goes.

Man, if I had a colt troop Mk3, I would shoot it every day I could. Not all firearms have to be "function over form" i mean if that was the case, why not just buy a glock and an AR, like you stated, and call it a day?

Given the current political climate, I wouldn?t sell anything. Even safe queens are like having gold bars in the safe.

I find limiting myself to a set number of firearms, and every firearm having to have a specific purpose (even if that purpose is a specific collection that just gives me enjoyment) helps me focus my thinking around what I want to keep and what I am willing to let go. Not that I am against gun hoarding, it sounds fun, just not something I want to do personally.

Right now my collection is about 5 guns over my personal limit, mostly because selling is a pain in the ***. Still I'll probably need to take some action soon, since I have 2 rifles in jail at the moment.

I do regret some that I've sold, I had a solid example of a Ruger 77/357 I really enjoyed that I shouldn't have let go, but in the long run that's a solvable problem.

But in the spirit of helping another calgunner out, I can help you dispose of that timberwolf. Hard to find buyers for those, but I'll take one for the team just to help you out. 😉

Sounds to me like you have classic GAS, gear acquisition syndrome. My advice, as someone who was forced to sell 90% of their collection due to divorce is to never sell guns, just buy more, that way you won't regret anything. But I would question if you feel you need more guns on top of what you have. I'm slowly rebuilding my collection but I won't ever have what I had before because I acquired a lot of C&R guns when C&R guns were a bargain, $89 Mosins, $199 SKS, $300 Enfields. Those days are gone forever so the guns I am rebuilding back with are much more function/purpose driven and less collector driven. It's 2023 and at some point, acquiring guns, in California especially, has and will become more and more expensive and arduous. I'd like to think that won't happen because of Bruen but our tyrants are doing the opposite, having temper tantrums and cracking down with more and more insane "laws" that are utterly Unconstitutional and illegal, but they do it anyway because so far, they can get away with it.

When you die, your family with either be glad for what you left for them or will sell it all. But at that point, it won't matter, you'll be dead. So I say buy and acquire what you want while you are alive to enjoy them, but I wouldn't be a in a hurry to sell off those guns just because you don't use them. What about just transferring them to your kids or in laws who might want to have them to shoot?

You do you. I sell stuff I don't use and have only sold 3 guns in my life. Gave away my .22 semi to my friend. It's not reliable so take it. A Stoeger 12g, again had to run full power loads for reliability, not for me. SP101 357 mag, replaced with LCR357, lighter and smaller. 300blackout barrel, I know I'll make a mistake one day so nah. I shoot all my guns on rotation, AR and CCW more than the others.

That?s just it, the Timberwolf is a great example. I?m in an urban environment so shooting rifles is not a daily occurrence. When I do have the time to drive to a place that makes shooting far possible I am infinitely more likely to bring along one of my ARs, AKs, Scar 17 (still unfired since new!), or a.308 hunting rifle (newly acquired).

Same goes for the pistol range?P365 goes always, but then it?s a mashup of randoms (not counting 1911s): CZ SP-01 (bring the .22cadet???), CZ P-01 (can?t remember the last time), Sip P226 Mk25 (with the non-LCI slide I just had to have), the PPK, and don?t get me started on the randomness pictured below?ugh.
