Spare barrels - long term storage

I have a couple spare barrels lying around, both new and used, for AR15 (nitride) and 10/22 (blued).

Since I have no idea when these might get installed and used, my inclination is to stuff and coat 'em with cosmoline type stuff, but am I over-thinking it?

i have 3 or 4 that are in the safe. coated them with grease inside and out.

I would put them in Poly bags. I have several rifles/pistols that have been in them 10 years plus and still look good. About one a year or two I drop a couple more Inhibitor vapor tabs in them just to keep the VCI level up.

Spray with CLP inside and out, wipe in nicely, store in a silica gun sock.

Fwiw, I have a 28" blued Mossberg 500 barrel that I just wipe CLP on inside and out and dropped it in a cardboard box in the closet.

I have about 30 extra barrels that I take out, clean, and oil once or twice a year, no significant issues. Sometimes they have a few spots of very superficial rust, but clean up just fine. Looking to move to a better storage system as my garage does get standing water (floor is wavy and it?s on grade) and the humidity gets high, but as long as I pay a tiny bit of attention it?s not an issue,

Thanks all... consensus seems to be "do something". I think my dad has some Brownells Rust Veto (basically cosmoline) around, will use that and wrap up in a buncha wax paper or something.

Otis Metal Defense bore sticks work great. I have a few barrels that are stored with them and have never had an issue. They come in many different calibers.

Cosmoline or equivalent works great, but is a bear to remove. I wouldn't use it unless I enjoyed the endless supply of free labor the military has.

Grease will work great, and is a lot easier to remove.

LPS 3 works amazingly well and is even easier to remove.

Breakfree COLLECTOR (not regular Breakfree) does a super job and doesn't have to be removed from the exterior, and is simple to remove from the bore.

What ever you use, I'd recommend Poly bags in addition to the oil/grease of choice.

I hear you on the cosmoline. I'd not consider it except for the fact that these are just 2 barrels; not a lot of nooks and crannies for it to hide in. I've dealt with a couple cosmolined parts and I think hot water will do an adequate job on removing the majority of it on such a simple piece of metal.

Wait for wife to leave the house, turn up the hot water heater a bit, give them a quick shower and you're basically good.

Just put them in the garage if you are in SoCal. I have a half dozen of 1911, Glock, and AR barrels in a box in garage some since 1995 and most not cleaned after last shooting.
cosmoline is messy...

I've got a bunch of spare parts. Wipe them down with oil and store then wherever you would anything else that moisture shouldn't get to and they'll be fine.
