Would 7 1/2 gameloads be able to dispatch skunk?

    And is this california legal.

Seems like this little fella is terrorizing myself and neighbor(same property).

Being woefully unprepared for critter dispatch, I don't have a .22 LR, I don't have any intermediate shotgun rounds, just home defense buck and slugs. Everything else is 9mm pistols and 7.62 rifles.

But I have some 7 1/2 " birdshot shotgun rounds, and a shortbarrel shotgun.

    1. Will this dispatch a skunk. Max range 10 meters.
    2. Is this legal?

Just keep in mind if you try this approach the skunk will spray when killed. My uncle shot one outside my cousins window and she was not too happy of having skunk smell in her room for a month. It also permeated her room and everything in it.

7.5 is a shot size for bbs, what caliber shotgun? 410,20,16,12,10? The smaller the number the bigger the boom.

Generally in city limits discharging firearms is illegal, maybe do it when some idiot launches a mortar firework.

They do make some pretty powerful .17,.22,.25 and even 357 sized airguns used for pesting. Generally lower in sound than guns. My friend uses it in his backyard in the city to take care of rats.

I mean it will work but I’d probably set a trap a hundred yards from the house. It’s going to be a stinky mess. I’d do something like a trash can half full of water with some cat food and when it falls in it will drown *** end under water.

Just off the top of my head, that sounds kinda messy.

You should have a .22 rimfire. Really. Make that happen.

I agree with the above— it will likely cause a stinky mess. Much better to trap and relocate and/or drown or put a precision shot to the brain. Do what’s legal and least likely to stink things up.

Also consider that we are entering skunk prowling season. The boys will be out and about looking for a mate for the next month or so. After that time you probably won’t see him again for another year.

We only know you are in LA county.
We don't know specifically where, but if you live somewhere you can normally discharge firearms and not have any complaints from the neighbors or law enforcement, you are probably OK to dispatch it on your private property following the rules posted above by cartridge calls.

The bigger problem I see here is not owning a 22LR rifle.
This seems to be like a great reason to get one and some lead-free ammo as you would not be able to legally use the lead shotshells that you have.

It’s not messy. It will kill them if you have a modified or full choke which is better. I take cotton tails with 7.5 lead (outa state) while dove hunting every year. But I admit 7.5 is a little light, depending on how far out you are from the skunk. I use “heavy” loads in 2 3/4” and modified choke for dove and the occasional cotton tail.

I’ll admit though if the rabbits are plentiful I’ll switch to #6 lead shot (again, out of state) in the other pocket as I always carry a few of those rounds with me because it’s a better “killer” sized shot for little furry animals. #5 lead is perfect for skunks, possum and high flying crows. But a skunk’s body outside it’s thicker fur, isn’t much tougher than a rabbit.
