    Advice for selling gun

Would like tips on selling a gun. I am considering selling using GB to sell my Ruger 454 but I have never used GB to sell just buy. Have never sold anything online. I did post it & a fishing rig on here but not having much luck. Considering using orange coast auctions but they want 20% seams kinda steep? I can sell it from a friend's gun shop but they cater more towards training & ccw classes and not much foot traffic. Could use tips on advertising it or selling it online.

If you're in California just post it on the marketplace. Just make sure and price it correctly.. no sense in giving someone else 20%

20% is the going rate on consignments through most shops . Some are starting to charge 25-30% .I’ve asked about the higher percentage with a couple shops and there all basically in the same boat. Your gun takes up shelf space .They do all the foot work to try and find a buyer for your gun ( the good shops at least) . They know that most people want as much as possible so the margins can be close to almost a new gun and makes your demographic for a buyer that much more narrow .when that’s the case it’s taking up space longer and they need to recoup money.

Besides GB fees your'll also have to deal with shipping and possible FFL charging to ship for you deducting your bottom line.

GB will send you an IRS 1099-MISC if you sell it for $600+, I hope you have your original receipt for it so you only pay tax on the profit if you sell it for more than you paid for it.

Try Armslist. Many buyers and sellers on there that has never used CG or Gunbroker.

For me, on Armslist bought a series 70 Colt Combat Commander (possibly first-run/production) from a Iraqi for $900 after fees and gas. (it was an awkward silence at ffl, when the seller was asked PoB and citizenship lol, I had to break the mood on everyone after it went dead silent.)

Also found a OG blued (not new production) 6" Colt Python for $1600. from another Armslist seller who is not listing on Armslist or elsewhere, which I can't buy or afford. I don't want it, but for at that price, I want it. But don't have the money, so I'm keeping the seller's private info in my back pocket so to say lol.

I've noticed an influx of CGers showing up on Armslist.

Looking at the completed sales on gunbroker, it sure seems to me that you would get your price. The cheapest have been about $860 with more being closer to $900-$1000. I'd hit up your local gunstore and ask if they'd ship it for you and if that cost and the possibility of only getting $850 from the auction is acceptable.....go that route.

                  Gun broker is fine

Shipping can crush you in 2 ways

1- ups and fed ex love to deny insurance claims. Read their policy on how thick and what type of cardboard must be used.

2- look into using a 3rd party account like ship my gun so you get a discounted rate. Most carriers require 1 day or 2 day shipping on handguns to limit employee theft. Find out the rate / cost before you start an auction.

Last thought - verify that you are indeed shipping to an FFL and not the buyer.
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT
                  (thanks to Jeff Cooper)

Thank you for all the sound advice. I am going to put it on consignment at the friends shop. May take a bit, but would rather put a few bucks in a friends pocket.

This sale should be a PPT, correct?

If you have a particular/specialized gun, run of the mill, or not the poplar taste of general public or this site, you may have to wait a bit to find that one buyer. One thing you can try is calculate what is your net number from consignment and lower your asking price close to that here and maybe someone local will bite.

Sometime it's hard to recoup your original bought price vs what the current market price are especially when you have a particular or specialized or undesirable gun. Sometime you might have to take a lost or wait for that one buyer. Yes to you question consignments should run as ppt. Good luck.

Thank all you guys for the sound advice. YES would totally agree a 454 casull would be for a special purpose & nobody in there right mind would use it for punching paper. Was my hunting sidearm. And to all you that got that Contender in the back of your safe I will consider trades.
