New questionable Policy at Tabors Shooting Store when shopping

I do not know what to make of this experience. I think this is a case of an owner being intimidated by a flawed gun laws, ignorance, lack of common sense or simply discrimination.
Here is the story. Today, I happen to be in the area of Tabor Shooting Store here in San Mateo County and decided to drop by to check on guns as I am considering getting me one for christmas. I previously bought my Sig, had the owner install night sight on my other Sig in this store so I am pretty sure the owner recognize me. To make the story short, the owner have a new policy whereby he cannot allow anyone to hold the gun without presenting a gun safety certificate. His reason, insurance requirement as the store is not covered if you shoot yourself or whoever. I did not have my certificate with me but I showed my CCW in Nevada and Utah as proof that I have gone thru training. Interestingly, it is not good enough. He could have also check his book that I did in fact recently bought a gun from him. He simply said no certificate, cant hold gun. I did not argue, I said OK and left. Well, he just lost one customer and possibly more forever.

Remember a little while back when a mentally ill man walked into Imbert and Smithers (Also in San Mateo County) asked to look at a handgun, then bolted out the door? He loaded the pistol with ammo he had on him and shot himself.

It's the insurance company that's trying to cover it's own *** by increasing premiums to San Mateo County gun shop owners.

Remember the spate of suicides that took place at indoor ranges that rented handguns? Most indoor ranges changed their rental policies to preclude rental to individuals unless they were accompanied by another shooter and/or they came in with their own handgun. It was their insurance companies that required that change in policy.
You are exactly right! Frank is not going to hand anyone a gun if he does not personally know or recognize him/her and I agree. He would not hand a gun to someone who comes in maybe a year or two after purchasing a gun even at his store because of problems like you've mentioned, if it was you on the otherside of the counter would you? Frank runs a tight ship and I say, thats OK by me.

By the way, did you see Frank in one of the Mythbusters shows were he shoots a "Hangman's Rope"? He cut it after the fifth shot. Good shooting!

Try going in next week. Frank Tabor seems to be really moody. When I first got into shooting I spent close to $3000 at his shop over a 6 month period. Even after this, sometimes he wouldn't even acknowledge I was in the shop, then the next time he would be all friendly and give me free M14 accessories, then a month later he wouldn't do out of state transfers, then a month after that out of state transfers were no problem. One week I'd get to hear "colorful" stories about his past, then ten days later he acts like I'm an ATF undercover agent.

        What a character!

I like Franks dog. He's a bear in a German Shepards clothing. And he likes to lick.

Frank is a good guy. Usually. Just don't get him going on WWII stuff.
