It's been 11 days and Big 5 won't give me my gun...

So I purchased a shotgun from Big 5 11 days ago. There's a girl that I usually see working the gun counter who's really helpful and knowledgeable, but she wasn't there today when I went in to pick it up. Today there was some girl there who I'd never seen before. I told her I was there to pick up a shotgun and she said she couldn't do any more firearms today. The girl said their electronic link to the DROS system was down. I said "So I can't take home the shotgun that I paid for?" She said "Nope."

What the heck? She took down my name and number and she said she'd call me when they got it fixed, but I'm still pissed off. Are they just being stupid or can they actually NOT give me my shotgun because they're having technical problems? Their electronic link to the DROS system was down? Does that make sense to any FFLs we have on the board here?

What's worse is I'm going on a shooting trip tomorrow and I was hoping to take the shotgun too... I guess I won't be

I think Big 5 has a stupid policy of holding a firearm purchase for 11 (24) hour periods, because they dont want people waiting for the rifle on the exact hour on the exact day.

Which is part of the reason I wont go there.

How come you didn't bring a copy of your dros and paperwork? I am sure that would have straighten things up if they couldn't find it.

yea.... i would've talked to a manager or something. i remember when i picked up my 10/22 at big5 i just showed the counter guy my DROS/receipt and he handed me the gun, finished filling out the DROS for pickup date, etc and i was outta there. no checks on the computer or anything.

Go back and get your shotgun. If she still says she can't give it to you, demand to speak to the manager.

Ask for box of free ammo in any caliber for your trouble.

I did. The girl said no, it is absolutely not possible for them to release my gun until the system is back up.

You guys are right, I should have demanded to talk to a manager. It's the one in Anaheim, on Orangethorpe. I'm gonna go back right now and get my shotgun. Thanks guys.

Haha! You don't know or understand their policy enough to call it stupid! They don't have an 11 x (24 hour) policy. They have an eleven calander day policy. They do it for their protection and your convience. They have far too many minimum wage employees who don't understand the laws and since they tell the buyer to come back in 11 days (on such and such date), the buyer won't be inconvienced by coming in too early on the 10th day. I've seen this happen at many FFLs and the buyer usually keeps trying to talk the dealer into releasing the gun a little early just so he doesn't have to wait around. I could see some Big5 employee releasing a gun 10 minutes early just to get rid of an annoying customer. Anyways, if you absolutly need a gun 240 hours after you pay for it, do not shop at Big5. If you know, understand and accept the fact that you have to wait until the 11th calander day to pick up your gun, you can find some good deals at Big5. I guess if you are impatient and/or can not plan 11 days in advance, you should not go to Big5.

I was at a fast food place that couldn't sell me a soda because the computer cash registers where down. It was a whole $1.49 and I said I would just give them $2 and they could keep the change after taxes but they said they had to Wait until the computers got fixed! Go figure.

Years ago when they opened the Walmart by my house, back when Walmart still sold guns in CA, I had the sporting goods dept manager insist that it was 10 business days before I could pick up the 10-22 I bought. Because of his job, he had to be the one to get the FFL even though he had never even fired a gun before! I will say that he errored on the side of caution. I explained that while the law said 10 calendar days I wasn't in that big of a hurry and would wait. When I picked it up, he apologized, seems he did look it up and found I was right.

His assistant was a lady who grew up around guns and was a great help. One time after cleaning out there ammo supply asked me how much I really wanted and ordered several cases of WWB 223 for me. The day it came in I was doing gardening and needed a shovel, we had a good laugh about me buying several cases of ammo and a shovel a the same time.

So I went back in and picked up my shotgun without a hitch. 5 minutes in and out. The girl from earlier wasn't even there -- there was somebody else working the gun counter. I figured there was no need to talk to a manager this time about my ordeal earlier in the day because I was indeed able to come in and get my shotgun without a problem.
