A great starting point for learning about firearm safety is the California Rifle and Pistol Association. They offer all sorts of classes for adults interested in firearms.

The thing to know is that learning about and practicing firearm safety is an ongoing process and continues throughout ones interest in and access to firearms.

If you've got the time, take a hunter's safety course. Lots of basic firearm safety info in the CA hunter's safety course that applies to any situation in which a firearm is involved. After that take an into to shooting class with a reputable instructor, they'll help you apply the knowledge from the HSC in a practical manner.
