I been contemplating a 37mm launcher for years but I dunno where I’d be able to shoot it and rounds are not that cheap or commonly available.

That's a bad***** looking setup.. definatly brings back predator memories from the first watch. Got to fire a couple 40 mm rounds while serving in the Corps.. we had the M79 launcher which was a shoulder fired and a MK19 which was a crew served full auto belted grenade launcher..

A semi-auto centerfire rifle that does not have a fixed magazine and has a flare launcher is considered an assault weapon under CA laws. [PC 30515(a)(1)(D)]
A semi-auto centerfire firearm. that is not a pistol, rifle, or shotgun, that does not have a fixed magazine and has a flare launcher is considered an assault weapon under CA laws. [PC 30515(a)(9)(D)]

So, installing a flare launcher on a semi-auto center rifle that does not have a fixed magazine is considered making an illegal assault weapon [PC 30600(a)] and possessing it is considered possessing an illegal assault weapon [PC 30605(a)]

In CA, possession of a non-CA Fire Marshal approved 37mm launcher will either be treated as an illegal destructive device or an illegal pyrotechnic launcher, depending on what types of rounds are found with it.

In order to be CA legal, the 37mm launcher needs to be approved by the CA Fire Marshal as an emergency signaling device and when possessed with only signal type rounds, it makes it exempt from CA destructive device laws/regulations. [HSC 12506, 12566, and PC 16460(a)(4)]

                          Health & Safety Code 12506
“Emergency signaling device” means a pyrotechnic device designed and intended by the manufacturer to be used as such and which provides a reasonable degree of safety to the user and does not create a fire hazard when used according to the label of instructions.

                          Health & Safety Code 12566
All pyrotechnic devices examined by the State Fire Marshal and found by him to come within the definition of “emergency signaling devices” in Section 12506 shall be classified by the State Fire Marshal as emergency signaling devices.

                          Health & Safety Code 12683
It is unlawful for any person to sell, use, or discharge any emergency signaling device not registered by the State Fire Marshal.

                          Penal Code 16460
                          (a) As used in Sections 16510, 16520, and 16780, and in Chapter 1 (commencing with Section 18710) of Division 5 of Title 2, “destructive device” includes any of the following weapons:
                          (4) Any rocket, rocket-propelled projectile, or similar device of a diameter greater than 0.60 inch, or any launching device therefor, and any rocket, rocket-propelled projectile, or similar device containing any explosive or incendiary material or any other chemical substance, other than the propellant for that device, except those devices as are designed primarily for emergency or distress signaling purposes.

                          Penal Code 18710
                          (a) Except as provided by this chapter, any person, firm, or corporation who, within this state, possesses any destructive device, other than fixed ammunition of a caliber greater than .60 caliber, is guilty of a public offense.
                          (b) A person, firm, or corporation who is convicted of an offense under subdivision (a) shall be punished by imprisonment in the county jail for a term not to exceed one year, or in state prison, or by a fine not to exceed ten thousand dollars ($10,000), or by both this fine and imprisonment.

                          Penal Code 30515

                          (3) A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has an overall length of less than 30 inches.
                          (9) A semiautomatic centerfire firearm that is not a rifle, pistol, or shotgun, that does not have a fixed magazine, but that has any one of the following:
                          (A) A pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon.
