Are dryfire practice devices worth buying?

    Hello again Calgunners!

For poor college students like me, would you suggest an investment in dry fire training devices like this?

MantisX is a revolutionary shooting analysis system that helps shooters of all levels. Improve shooting more rapidly in the home or at the range.

I think it depends on what you are training for. I bought the Mantis Blackbeard to train for quick presentation from different ready positions and shooting controlled pairs for Front Sight's (RIP) Practical Rifle course and it helped a lot.

    The pluses:
    > You are practicing with the actual rifle you will be shooting. Similar weight other than the magazine but same LOP, cheek weld, grip, etc.
    > The trigger is your actual trigger, so the trigger weight is identical, at least the 1st stage on a 2-stage trigger.
    > Rapid subsequent shots are possible, good for controlled pairs or multiple targets.

    The minuses:
    > no recoil.
    > You are limited to the AR15 platform. No AR10, no Sig MCX, AR9, etc. The bolt has to be an AR15 bolt, period. It might work with CMMG RDB guns, might. But I never tried it.
    > The sight height over bore is an issue. Unless you have a very large dry fire distance, it won't work unless you don't mind adjusting your sight or optic. Even then, it is highly distance dependent, so hard to dry fire at targets at different distances. If your barrel is short, you can adjust the elevation of the laser beam such that the laser hits at your point of aim. But longer barrels, even 16" barrels, will require a longer dry fire distance.
    > The reset is not your actual trigger reset, but the Blackbeard's reset mechanism. Your hammer does not travel through its full travel.
    > The battery pack only weighs the same as a 30 round magazine with 8-9 rounds of 5.56.
    > The battery pack is also shorter than a 30 rd magazine, so monopod-ing off the battery pack is very different. Going prone or seated (depending on your style) on their magazine may be different enough from a 30 rounder.

I use the MantisX, even when it first came out. I have the X10 Elite (bought at a lower price thanks to discount since I supported the first version). It can significantly help…

Imagine how getting consistent average scores of 97~ to a one-inch target at 5-yards translate to live fire…

No. None of the champion shooters use them or have any need for them. You would be better off buying a shot timer and a copy of Ben Stoegers Dry Fire Reloaded. He has a deal on his website with 1/4 scale targets and the book. https://benstoegerproshop.com/dryfir...caled-targets/

I bought the Mantis 1st Gen before I took any classes and got some
Training . Once I took some classes and got the book , I never touched the mantis again .

Here is a 30 day dry fire routine , no timer or props either. With or without a holster .

A few months ago, I quickly put together an example of a dry fire routine for a friend who just got a SIRT pistol and wanted to make good use of it. The approach involves having a month-long plan. …

Have the Mantis Laser Academy system. It's a great and actually fun dry fire set up.

I saw a gadget that uses co2 cartridges to run the slide. It probably doesn't have enough energy to work with the factory recoil spring, but at least you can practice with a moving slide (and sights) and a trigger that resets in the normal way.

I tend to agree with others saying that it's not needed as that hasn't been my experience or others that I know. Also, trigger control is usually not as important with rifle shooting since you have a lot more stability vs a pistol.

Having said that, I haven't tried this system so if there are M/GM competition shooters here that have had good results with it, it'd be worth a shot.

Just dry fire it and be honest with yourself on whether the sights move when you press the trigger

It depends on what you intend to use it for.

I have the G Sight, and I find it wonderful for drawing from concealed.

If It were using it for trigger control, Snap caps would be sufficient for me.

OP, if you know someone who reloads in the cartridge you use, have them run some though, no powder or primer and fill the primer hole with RTV. IN the case they can put some sand. It will weight the same as real ammo.

If you have something like a Glock, 1911, Beretta, most HKs just get a gas blowback airsoft. THe dry fire systems don't even come close. You get some sound, decent although not full recoil and cycle action but get everything else.

The Glocks are nearly identical. You get to swap mag, work the slide, use the same holster, trigger and other features are the same. Run it for cheap.

Best thing you'll ever do. Hit up an airsoft shop, they get them in trades. Even bought new they aren't expensive. For SD distances they are plenty accurate too and if you are into gadgets, all the goodies can be mounted on them as well.
