Other than the extremely obvious like ammo/ears/eyes

I always bring oil/grease and tools like hex/torx/anything that I would need to service my gun for any reason.

I brought the kitchen sink once, but ended up shooting it.
Also, everyone at the range with a range bag eventually make it to me needing tools, tape, sighting laser, chrono, targets...

Which range bag? Different bags or packs for handguns at the indoor range vs long guns at the long distance BLM spot.
                The essentials are in all.

My range bag is for range (shooting) items other than guns, magazines, belts, holsters, etc. There is a large central compartment where I put ammo for the day and then take it out.

Of the items mentioned above, I don't keep cleaning supplies in the range bag, I have a separate large range bag with all sorts of cleaning items for many calibers. If I need to take a cleaning kit, I'll pack it separately so it never messes up my main bag.

The additional items (not mentioned above):
                  - Small measuring tape (for target dimensions, group sizes, shooting box setup, etc.)
                  - Extra batteries (generic; specialized are in gun bags for each gun).
                  - Towel (for hands, face)
                  - Hat
                  - Small backup targets (just in case I forget target bag)
                  - Stapler with extra staples (in case I don't take target bag with me)
                  - Magazine brush (long one, used in USPSA)
                  - Very long screwdriver with cut slot for compressing magazine springs
                  - Squib rod and small hammer (keep it light)
                  - Small set of hex wrenches
                  - Small set of star wrenches
                  - Multi tool with pliers (for pulling out staples, etc.)
                  - Small plastic box with fiberoptic, various sizes
                  - Timer(s) and spare batteries
                  - Small medical kit with tourniquet

And the usual things mentioned above such as range finder, ear plugs, ear muffs, eye protection, spare ammo pouches (for belt), uplula(s), some revolver moonclips and tools, etc.

The R1 Bang Bang Range Bag is fast gaining popularity, and for good reason.  We set out to make the greatest-ever traditional range bag, and many of our customers tell us we succeeded.  It’s loaded with practical  features that extend its usefulness to things like medical kits, cameras, and tool kits.  Featuring a configurable padded main compartment, mag pouches and organizers in zippered compartments at both ends, and grapple straps for attaching shooting mats and gun cases, and a tool/handgun tray in the bottom.  Made of 1000d nylon mounted to a deep Polycarbonate base that makes the R1 impervious to wet ground, rocks, debris, and range dust.

If I'm shooting handguns, my range just has open pits with no infrastructure, so I have to bring (besides firearms + ammo)

                      card table

                      folding chair

                      Two target stands + targets

                      Metal swing target

4 ea clay pigeon holders with pipes and pigeons

Sun umbrella plus sandbags to hold it in place

                      ear protectors

                      Stapler + staples

                      sight adjuster

                      target pasters

                      GI wound bandage

                      empty brass container

                      short cleaning rod

                      Spray lube

                      Sometime a chronograph plus tripod

I use a plastic tool box for handgun range bag that can take a padlock.

People will say "it's plastic- it isnt secure enough".

The PC doesnt stipulate how secure, is secure enough,... just that it's a locked container.
