    Ammo Find

Usually don't go out "garage sale'ing", but there was something about this place, older neighborhood, older couple, looking like they were downsizing. Anyway, pulled in, looked around, and found a box with some other stuff I'm interested in, and made an offer.

Under the stuff, was some interesting older 22lr ammo from Sears and Peters.

Most of it looks to be in pretty good shape, but there were some green growing crusty buggers as well.

Now I'm thinking I should have looked closer at that steamer trunk looking box as well.

So Remington made ammo for Peters and Federal for Sears?

    I did not know that.

I just looked it up and Remington bought Peters in 1934.

I need to look through my stash of old stuff and look into it further.

More fun to read about Peters Cartridge Company. https://www.daytondailynews.com/news...cnrnOhWsayJSO/

    BTW, cool find OP.

The green stuff you found on some of the ammo is verdigris. Its a mildly acidic build up that happens to brass /copper/bronze over time , usually due to exposure from the natural environment, moisture, contamination from a salty based liquid. It wipes right off ammo , sometimes needing some elbow grease Ammo is still good as long as it isn’t physically pitted.
My first hand experience with the stuff came around when I started collecting vintage Randall knives . Every now and then you might find some forming around a brass hilt on a knife that was stored in. It’s sheath for too many years or it would sometimes collect around reinforcement bronze rivets on leather sheaths . A wooden toothpick worked really well at removal from rivets without staining the vintage leather sheaths with chemicals.

Those peters are mostly from the 1980's.
I remember getting those same peters boxes at fedco, gemco and kmart back in the 80's.
The sears may be as old as late 70's but they still had them like that into the early 80's as well.

You're probably right. I know we had some of the Sears-boxed stuff in the late 60s. As it happens, the only time I ever saw .22 longs (NOT long rifle) they were from Sears. My brother and I could never convince my father that longs and long rifles were not the same. So he would go into a store and ask for some longs, and, of course, the clerk was glad to sell him some.

Sears and Montgomery Wards contracted with Federal for most of their branded ammo, although, Sears did use Winchester also many years ago.

That Sears 22 has a "F" on the head.

Nice find---not particularly old, but collectable---if you were nearby, I'd try and buy a couple to add to my vast rimfire collection...

I’ve got 6 or 8 boxes of the red box Sears in 30 carbine. A buddy gave it to me years ago. To pretty to shoot.
