    Information on Magazine Coating

Anyone have any information about any shops in Northern California doing magazines coatings?

I have some magazines that are stainless steel and I want them coated with a black coating either ceracoat/teflon or any of the popular coatings.

No special colors required just black.

    Thanks in advance.

It’s been done . I purchased a century golani 12 years ago or so.it came with 15 35 rounds Galil parts kit mags .they were rusty and finish worn so the previous owner had them duracoated (which I never hear about people doing any more lol) and they came out nice ..although now people want battle worn stuff over refurbishment.Ditched the Rifle ...don’t miss the rifle , miss those mags.

If you decide to refinish them yourself look into duracoat . Don’t know if it’s still around but if not surface prep your mag bodies before you coat them . If there the shiny extruded stainless sheet metal then hit them with 2000 grit for a scratch coat in giving a better surface for the paint to stick, spray them off with brake cleaner ..don’t really need to primer them get a good rattle can paint the kind with a catalyst ejector on the bottom of the can . Hang them by welding wire or wire coat hanger .Give them a fog coat across all of them then come back with them still tacky on a final coat .Dry ,reassemble, done.

If your adamant about sending the mags out to be finished by a pro ,I don’t know if there still in the game and who out there might know but there WAS a company Birdsong and they did a Teflon based finish called Black -T .over the years I saw a few S&w revolvers refinished in it and they came out great . Almost like the night guard series before they were available .I came across the finish years ago , my left handed Ernest Emerson designed Bench made tanto folder had a black t finished blade .I unfortunately don’t know any direct places in Northern California specifically.

My only experience with coating stainless steel is with a barrel. I sent a stainless barrel to Robar, when there used to be a Robar, for their black oxide coating. They told me it was as durable, and would wear like a blued barrel. So far they're correct.

There is a place in Lincoln by the airport that does nDLC coating and they are 2A friendly IIRC

If you end up having anything done to these mags please let us know how it turns out.

for mags I would duracoat. They sell a kit in a rattle can. Super easy DIY. It looks expensive but any shop is going to charge you at least $10 a pop probably more, so if you have more than 2 or 3 mags the duracoat is probably cheaper.

I duracoted some and they began to bind up in the mag well, perhaps have them powder coated.

Mags take the most wear and tear, I would just leave them how they are, most coatings will gradually just start coming off eventually.

                        Powder coating is paper thin.

Am I the only one that thinks it is going to cause drag on the drop function of releasing the magazine.

I find myself sanding a few of mine on the sides to reduce drag.

I wouldn't be against bluing, but adding layers of any kind of coating I just see as causing drag. Sure as heck don't coat the follower, spring, or anything on the inside of the magazine.

Maybe it doesn't matter for a range gun, but don't be surprised if you have to pull the magazine out with your fingers.

I'm wondering how Cerakote would hold up on a mag? You also want to be careful that whatever you coat it with does not increase the friction of the mag so it doesn't drop free.
