Widow Needs to Sell Dead Husband's Guns

    Question for the Masses:

How can a widow sell (PPT) her dead husband's guns? What does she need to provide in terms of paperwork? AND ...if the guns were never mentioned in a trust, how does she prove she's owner and entitled to sell?

    many thanks in advance.

Find a reputable local gun store that will take them all on consignment. She doesn't need the hassle of normal PPT transactions.

Agree with 1911 Ronin, she is better off taking them to a good FFL that will handle them. Going rate can be as low as 15 percent.
      Not too bad.

There is no need to prove anything. All she needs - the only thing she needs - is a CA ID.

Widow has 60 days to sell via PPT without limit - I would try and sell via PPT before I took a 20% - 25% haircut. There may be places that sell for 15% but they are likely few and far between, and there is probably a reason why they sell for less commission - perhaps they have less foot traffic etc.

Unfortunately I’ve had some friends deal with this recently. At least where I’m at, the prices offered were so low that a couple of guy stepped up each time and just offered to set prices and find buyers for all the stuff for the widow, with her just having to go do the PPT and collect money.
Buying a safe and sane firework is like paying a hooker for a hug. I do not see the appeal in it.

Where does she live? Can send to reputable ffl or she can list on here.

Agree with Skyhawk. Don’t consign, post them for her on her and set up buyers. As far as the 5 transactions a year who cares. Imagine “woman charged with selling her deceased husbands firearms through the legal avenues”

Get a friend who knows guns, make sure there is nothing illegal, don't post about it, then take the rest to a gunshop for consignment.

Have her call Lock Stock And Barrel in Simi. They will come over pick them up and she will wait a month or two and get a check. Yea they get 20% but they usually get good prices. I’ve used them and was happy.

Thanks, everybody. Got the info I was seeking. I'll make sure she's well taken care of - fulfilling a promise to my dearly departed buddy.

My condolences on losing your friend, and good luck with the sale

If they are any old school AK or off roster competition handguns, those should be able to sell quickly via the marketplace
