Do’s and Dont’s of maintaining “Blue” firearms

Looking to tap into some of the infinite firearm wisdom that some of you with a hell of a lot more experience than I.

For starters I just picked up a steel frame colt wheel gun, looking to pass this one on through generations. Hence the need to do my due diligence maintaining it.

    Thanks in advance!

buy an appropriate sized pelican case for it, on the inside of the case, use closed cell foam, not open cell foam. after cleaning, seal the entire surface of the gun with a thin layer of synthetic grease, put it inside the case, close it, lock it, never shoot the gun.

Don't store in a foam case

There is a product called RIG - rust inhibiting grease. Great for long term storage

Silicon impregnated case for storage and protection.
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

I do not store firearms in a case where the metal is in contact with cloth or foam.

Not an expert here. This is what I have done over the years. Wipe down with silicone gun cloth. Original box witch is cardboard never been an issue. Original box with foam, or styofoam liner, use wax paper gun wrap.

              Boxes, and wax paper here,,,

              So far so good.

Long guns sit naked in the safe. Just wipe with silicone cloth. I never had an issue.

Shoot it often, carry it, create some history with the gun. It will be worth much more to your heirs knowing that you have legitimate history with the gun. I have a Kimber that I have carried for a decade while hunting, it is worth much more to me than my much more expensive Les Baer, because the Baer is a safe queen. I shoot the Kimber often and clean it often. Don't be afraid to use it. Good luck.

Wipe it down with an oily rag every time before storage whenever it has been handled with bare hands. Wipe the gun and oil the bore every year or two. Store in a dry environment in a silicone impregnated gun sock.

                      DO keep it oiled
DO NOT store inside a foam lined case
DO NOT use a "Lead away" rag on it

                        For emphasis!

Do not use anything but Hoppes 9 and a good oil or CLP.

Do not use steel brushes or steel wool

Keep hot sauce, ketchup, windex, juices, salts, bologna hands etc away (and a hundred other things).

Always wash your hands before handling if possible. I always handle my most prized guns with inspection gloves (unless I am shooting)

                          Clean intently with CLP

Shoot it at least 3 times a year.

Clean intently with CLP after every shoot.

If you plan on not shooting it for a while, Clean intently with CLP and be generous with the CLP. Inspect it every 2 months if not shooting. Clean it at least 2 times a year.

If I shoot alot in one year, I like to use gunscubber in one cleaning a year. You must be really dedicated to oiling it properly after using gunscubber as it dries out all the oils from all the small crevasses.

I dreamed of owning a (insert off roster gun here)...

Oh yeah....then the earth splits open with me on one side and the (off roster gun) on the other. Then appeared a large red-glowing pit with gavin newscum, diane frankenstein and governor "brown the drain" at the bottom of it, waving their pitchforks at me.

If you want to pass it down to future generations, make sure you do not drop it on the carpet.

If you use open cell foam, just spray plasti-dip on the foam. It'll make it kinda like closed cell foam.
