7,774 yard shot. New world record

    4.4 miles. Dang

A team of long-range shooting experts in Wyoming set what appears to be the new world record for the longest rifle shot ever completed: 7,774 yards or 4.4 miles. Scott Austin and Shepard Humphries led the team from Nomad Rifleman, a shooting range and instruction center based in Jackson Hole...

It was a 10’x7’ wide target and not repeated. It took 69 rounds to walk it in. I too can launch artillery till I hit something.

Cool, but not what I’d call a shooting record.

^but consider that at that distance, 10' x 7' is about 1.5MOA or something like that. Of course it's artillery by that point, but still. All the super-long range ones are, and I think I read the previous record also took similar number of attempts. I still think it's an incredible feat.

Even artillery can usually splash one on target in 2-3 rounds. Not 69…dude!!

While impressive, that target is the size of an SUV.

We used to walk 45ACP rounds out at a place where the sea ducks would be sitting eventually getting close enough to make them dive under the water. Shooting up on a cliff out over the Pacific I would guess roughly 500 yards or more.

                    It was pretty fun.

Still impressive regardless. 4.4 miles is a LONG way for a projectile to travel.

Incredible engineering and technical feat that needs to be taken for what it is - an extreme long range project with custom bunkers along the way and a full support team. This is not a combat technique, this is pushing the limit of technology and understanding the wind.

Someone being sniped would catch on after several missed rounds

It’s impressive. Dont get me wrong. But for a shooting record I’d like to think maybe 10 rounds max and repeated within another 10 rounds. That’s shooting, not lobbing ammo. I’d be more impressed with 3 miles and that kinda criteria than 4.4 miles and shoot till you hit it.

I’d say the science of the round is the really impressive part.

How is this impressive in any sense? Why after 69 shots and not after 59 or any other number? Shooting until you hit something isn't skill, it's luck. Had the shooter, after figuring out the trajectory and all that proceeded to hit that target numerous times or even just 2 additional times, okay, you could say there is skill involved. There was not much.

                              From the article:

:The team took 69 shots the day they set the record, and their final shot miraculously hit the eight-inch center circle. The white rectangular target measured 10 feet wide and seven feet, eight inches tall–or about 1.7 MOA. Hitting the center circle was equivalent to putting a bullet on an area the size of a pinhead at 100 yards, Humphries explained."

There you go, just BS because there are people right on this forum (I'm guessing" who could hit a pinhead at 100 yards using a 22 rimfire and do it in far less than 69 shots.

There is no MOA involved, there was no group unless you count the total of the 69 shots and then talk about the group and MOA. I doubt it was 1.7 anything.

"A standard thought experiment from probability theory states that a million monkeys hammering a million typewriters (or a hundred, or a thousand) will eventually write the entire works of Shakespeare (or Dickens, or all the books in the British Library).

How many monkeys shooting rifles at that distance would it take before one of them hit the target? Since its really just luck and not a repeatable effort, it might be the first shot. Would that be a record too?
